Dear Campbells,
So, if you've been watching, I'm sure you have noticed that I am
searching high and low for Campbells. I have little bits and pieces in
my mind from all of the discussion on this list.
Someone had a name like maleander, well I found an Aleander Campbell and
perhaps the name in a record could have gotten written down wrong.
Maybe M. Aleander Campbell or something like that..
Resided 1840 in Indiana.
Might Help
Who knows. Looking at the way these records get mispelled it isn't any
wonder that we seek but never find.

Is anyone on the list working on George Campbell and Lucy Hudson who was
married May 20, 1817 Amherst County, Virginia. This George possibly has two
brothers by the name of Lawson and Washington and they both married sisters
of Lucy. Mary Ellen bichon(a)alltel.net
Dear Diarmid and Margo,
I have been researching this Campbell family for sometime now. In regards to
the name Auchinbreck, I was told by a Scottish gentleman at one of our
Scottish Society meetings that "Auchinbreck" was in Ayrshire. This was very
good to hear, as my Simpsons are from Ayrshire as well. I have checked the
map I have of Scotland without finding Auchinbreck. Is there someone of you
on List that has an old map of Scotland, that might show this area.?
One other comment I would like to make is that the person you are calling
Margaret Campbell, Margo, is Lady Mary Campbell, daughter of Sir James of
Auchinbreck.
Her name may have been Mary Margaret, but she was definitely called, "Mary."
I know you say Diarmid Burke's Peerage has errors in the 1700's. So far,
this is the best that we have in dealing with the lineage of this family,.
For instance, Burks says, Sir James was Governor of Ireland from I believe
1693 to 1695 (I don't have my papers right here) This fits nicely, as
Michael Woods could very well have met Mary in Ireland when her father was
governor. The whole thing fits nicely, so until I get concrete evidence that
is NOT so, then this is what I am going to stay with.
Sincerely,
Bonnie Simpson Valko

In the hope, this will help someone: I have in my possession a letter from
a gentlemen I presume to be passed on by this time. The letter is post
marked March 20,1978 and was written to a relative of mine then given to me
because of my interest in genealogy. It is from a Sandpoint, Idaho address
... my father died in Sandpoint July 23, 1981, and is buried in Priest river
near Sandpoint, Idaho.
and I quote...acording to our (the author's) record two brothers came to
America sometime before the Revolutionary War of 1775 to 1783. I don't have
their names. When the war came one fought on the Kings side and one on the
Yankee side. The one on the Yankee side is supposed to have settled in
Vermont. The other brother settled in Canada, where he became the father of
two boys named Thomas and James. There seems to be no previous record.
James parted with his wife who came to Michigan and settled with the family
near Port Huron.
Thomas bought land near Osgoode, Ontario and he would be my (author of the
letter)Great great grandfather. He had a large family of 13 children. The
oldest was Ellis born 1810. He is my (the author's) great grandfather. The
childrens' names were Thomas, Ellis, Nelson, John, David, Thomas, Alexander,
Albert, William, Jane, Sallir(this spelling is questionable), Rosina, Nancy
and Harriet.
Ellis married Melissa Chamberlin in 1833 they had 8 children. They were,
Melinda, Thomas Jane Nathaniel Alonzo William Lydia and Adrian.
Nathaniel was my (the author's) Grandfather. Alonzo came west and settled
near Lind WA as near as I can remember. He died at Fort Stilicoom WA July
12, 1912. I thing the rest of the family died in Michigan. etc, etc.
I attempted to avoid changing this letter in most cases unless the grammer
or the punctuation simply screamed at me.
I have no further information in regards to this ... I do however believe
this letter was written by someone that may be a cousin because of the name
associations that I can make with me family. If I can ever break through
this wall I may one day know the relationship of this gentleman to me or may
prove that he is not.
I would welcome any further info that anyone has...I appoligize, but I don't
have much to offer in the way of any other info however.
In the spirit of assistance,
Ann F

siblings, George, Robert, Dorothy, Sam, Frank, Gene, albert. Where did they
come from and where did they go? Some of them were framers and others were
in the lumbering industry in Wisconsin. In the next generation (my father's
generation) 3 moved to Washington State, 2 stayed in WI and all have died.
Do you recognize these names?
Ann

Margo,
Thanks for posting your Campbell material.
A couple of corrections: The Campbell family in Argyll may have lived at
Auchinbreck (Achnabreck in the Gaelic original - 'ach' meaning a field and
'breck' meaning spreckled or marked or spotted in color) since I have not
found an "Archinbreck" (I live in Argyll) and suggest that it is a
mis-transcription. Auchinbreck is pronounced "ahinBRECK" with the first "a"
as in "ah."
Then (1)... 3 Margaret Campbell born on the 2nd of June 1690 appears to have
been born in Edinburgh which is on the other side of Scotland from
Argyll(shire) and so must either have been born in Edinburgh or Argyll -
short of an horrific journey during the birth cross country.
You do not mention your source for this material, but sadly the Auchinbreck
article in 'Burke's Peerage and Baronetage' (any large city library) is in
error in places for the 17th century.
If the material was from the "Duncan Campbell and Mary McCoy" section of
Margaret Pilcher's book on the Campbells, no evidence has been found in
Ireland to support anything earlier than John Campbell in Pennsylvania. Her
source she states as hearsay from a very elderly person who appears to have
had their facts mixed - but that may be another line than yours.
If your source material is primary (i.e. from original documents dated at
the time of the events described) rather than secondary sources (i.e. from
printed material hopefully copied accurately later in time from original
sources), then I stand corrected and you are right.
Not much help but maybe some...
All best, Diarmid Campbell, Argyll, Scotland - to the INTERNATIONAL Campbell

There is/was a Farmington located in Coles County Illinois, Pleasant Grove
Twp. It is now no more than a wide spot in the road located approx. 8 miles
south of Charleston and 1 mile north of the Coles/Cumberland County line.
Farmington has a church standing with Farmington, Illinois on the front.
This is located near the historic Lincoln Log Cabin State Park and the Moore
home. Both have historic ties to Abraham Lincoln.

Does anyone have info on Archibald Campbell born abt 1695 in Soctland?
I have his sons as Malcolm married to Isabell Big Lick, VA (Roanoke), James,
William and John married to Elizabeth Walker.
Here's my problem. This line shows John mother as Margaret and father as
Robert. I Have his father as Archibald mother unknown. I guess his mother
could have remarried.
Does anyone have more info on this line.
Dottie
Hello Margo,
This is also my Campbell line as well. My 3rd great grandmother was Sarah,
the daughter of Gilbert Campbell. I want to ask where you got your dates on
your lineage, as they differ from mine quite a little. Looking forward to
hearing from you.
Sincerely,
Bonnie Simpson Valko
