Dear Campbell researchers
Thank you so much for all the help you have given me. I have alot
to sort through and answer. Please be patient if I haven't answered
you directly yet.
Now to expand on the Stewart & Campbell connection to my Hon
William Townshend. I have discovered quite a few facts linking Hon
William Townshend to Lord Sydney (Thomas Townshend, 1733 -
1800). What I have also noted is that a certain Lt.Col. Robert
Stewart and a Duncan Campbell seem to be somewhat connected
to Lord Sydney. This I still need to properly confirm.
Now for the history lesson: Lord Sydney was Secretary of State
from 1783. Sydney, Australia and Sydney, Nova Scotia is named
after him. It was he that sent Captain James Cook on the journey
where the crew of the HMS Bounty mutineed. I also know that the
discoveries of Stewart Island, just below New Zealand was named
at the same time that Sydney harbour was named. 600 Kilometres
further south is Campbell Island. What I need to discover is; who
these islands were named after, whether they were the Duncan
Cambell and Lt.Col Robert Stewart and whether these Campbells
and Stewarts were the same families connected with my Hon
William Townshend.
Sincerely
Derek Wray Townshend

Hello list,
Well, today I got some documents that quite discouraged as well as
enlightened me. I found out that some of the names in my line I have
been looking for are wrong......apparently these people were known by
"nick" names and those were the names I was told. so now I would like
to ask for help finding them, the real ones.
Charles Frederick CAMPBELL.......which I now know was born in Oklahoma.
I also now know that his wife was "Vena BEAVER", which I had originally
thought was Mary Aldena Beaver.
They had several children. However, my grandmother was Edythe (earlier
I spelled it as "Edith") Madeline (earlier I thought it was Mae or May)
CAMPBELL. She was born 1-23-1910 in Oklahoma. She married Clyde Ezra
BALLARD in Oklahoma. She died 2-20-1999 in California.
Does anyone have any info on this? I appologize for my earlier
mistakes.
Thanks in advance.

Mary,
I can't give you a direct answer, but perhaps I can show you a path
through the weeds. First of all, Ellenboro is in Rutherford County.
Also, beginning with 1913, all births, marriages and deaths were
required to be formally recorded. So for both your grandparents there
should be a death certificate. Often, but not always, the parents of
the deceased are shown. So, you could request from the office of
Recorder of Deeds a copy of their death certificates.
Another possibility is the census. You should be able to find them in
the census of 1900, since neither would have been of age then. That
should show you their parents and siblings.
Hope this helps,
Jim Campbell

Dear Campbell researchers
My genealogical research has lead me to a John Campbell which I
think is the 1st Duke of Argyll. I do not know my Scotish roots or
Scotish terminology very well so before you conclude this as
"wishful thinking" please hear me out.
The information gathered for my claim is circumstantial and needs
to be corroborated. I would be most appreciative of anyone who can
give me the official, certified ancestors of the 1st Duke of Argyll.
I have been trying to find the family connection of Hon William
Townshend, Collector of Customs of Prince Edward Island (also
briefly governor of PEI). He married Flora Stewart, daughter of Peter
Stewart (b.1725), Chief Justice of Prince Edward Island. I have
heard that this Stewart line was of the head of the clan of Stewarts.
Peter Stewart was born in Campbeltown, Argyll, a place
associated with the Campbells (I think). Apparently, Peter
Stewart's wife, Helen MacKinnon was also of the head of the clan
of MacKinnons. Peter Stewart's father, Charles Stewart marries
Annabella Campbell, daughter of John Campbell (speculated to be
the 1st Duke) and Elizabeth MacNeil.
>From my dubious sources I have gathered that John Campbell
(1693-1770), 2nd Duke, has a sister named Anne and a mother
named Elizabeth. I am hoping that this is the Annabella Campbell,
grandmother of Peter Stewart.
Now let me explain how the Townshend family comes into all of
this. Firstly, I know that Lord Charles Townshend, 2nd Viscount,
(with partner Robert Walpole - later Prime-minister) support the 2nd
Duke of Argyll during the Jacobite uprising. It is also known that
the 2nd Viscount's grandson, Rt Hon Charles Townshend (known
for the infamous tax act of 1767) marries Lady Dalkieth, Caroline
Campbell, daughter of the 2nd Duke.
Hon William Townshend's family connection is not fully concluded.
It is highly likely that he is another grandson of the 2nd Viscount
Townshend and 1st cousin to the other Townshend politicians. I
have written a short essay describing the evidence of his family
connection. Among the evidence I describe the Campbell
connection. I would be delighted if anyone would take an interest in
this and read my article at:
www.townshend.co.za/pei_connection.htm , also mirrored at
home.worldonline.co.za/~townshend/pei_connection.htm .
>From that article I link to the information I have about the
Campbells at:

If I can prove that Peter Stewart's grandfather, John Campbell was
the 1st Duke of Argyll then I can probably establish that the Lords
Townshends of Raynham Hall knew the Campbell and Stewart
families long before William was even born. This would be very
strong evidence indicating that Hon William Townshend was indeed
a grandson of Charles Townshend, 2nd Viscount.
For further interest, it is known that Sir William James Montgomery
helps Peter Stewart to get his position as Chief Justice of PEI even
though Peter Stewart only has a background in Scotish Law and
not English Law as was required. William Montgomery was the
Lord Advocate for Scotland. I am almost sure that this William
Montgomery who was the father of Anne Montgommery who
marries George Townshend, 4th Viscount, 1st Marquess and elder
brother of Rt Hon Charles T (mentioned above). The Montgomery
family also seems to be associated with Campbeltown in Argyll.
Also for further interest is the fact that Peter Stewart marries Sarah
Campbell when his wife, Helen Mackinnon dies.
Yours Sincerely
Derek Wray Townshend
Hello:
I have been searching for James Frank Campbell's parents and spouse's name.
He was born in 1810 - 1815 (depending on the source) in SC. I know he lived
in Abbeville area. He died in 1877 in Wedowee,Al-Rnadolph County.
I have been searching for his parents for years.
His wife is listed as Margarett J. Some have said her last name was Bird/Byrd
and she was at least part Native American. She was born in 1816 in SC.
Any help with my Campbell line would be greatly appreciated. I have lots of
info from Frank foward and would be happy to share.
