Hi all,
For what it's worth, another list with Scottish roots I'm on uses the term
NGI (NON-Genealogical INFO) in its headings for the fun stuff. It's brief
(for those whose ISPs don't allow much of a subject line) and ALL of us use
it...
You should hear the curse against us from the Archbishop of Glasgow 500 years
ago...and never rescinded... It's NGI, of course!

STILL looking for Mary Ann (Nancy) Campbell b. ca 1825 TN, m. 1847 to
Carroll Lindsey Lewis Co, TN, d. aft 1861. Said to be dau of Richard, Jr of
Fairfield Co, SC but I don't think I believe it...
I have yet to find anything on my family, but I have been able to point a few
people in the right direction. If it wasn't for the stories, heritage, etc. I
would have become frustrated and left the list a long time ago. Keep them
coming people. I enjoy them.
Julie, thank you for the information about Needfire. I had never heard
about that. It was very interesting.
I so agree with you about family history. We need the names and dates, but
it is the stories and the customs that put the life into our ancestors. It
would be wonderful if everyone had stories passed down through the
generations. Thanks again, Lynda

I have to agree with Barry. Off topic should be simply that, off topic.
However, if you are posting data for input, it would be very nice if the re
line stated when the Campbell you are seeking information about lived and
where he originated and ended his journey.
As Karen's message stated sometimes it is obvious from the re line.
History - history, Help - help; Humor - humor
Let's just choose direct, short subject lines and if you need to send 2
messages, send 2.
Gloria Butler Davis
I at first agreed with the suggestion that non-genealogy posts be labeled off
topic. Then I thought about the fact that the title of most posts would
already indicate this. A post entitled Family Traits is obviously not
specificaly dates and names. Highland Games is not either, nor or posts titled
The History of the Kilt or Bagpipes. Busy people that have not the desire to
hear of general history or discussion regarding Campbells would benefit more
from a post that the subject line contained the following: All in caps:
CURLY CAMPBELL>>1850>>VA>>KY If this example were to be followed then those
that were in a hurry could also delete without reading posts about Campbells
from California;if theirs were in Australia etc. Some of the purely
genealogical lists have this type of requirement for all posters.--------Karen Kerr
This sort of problem comes up on many lists.
The best answer is simply to prefix general discussions and threads
with 'Off Topic'
to begin the posting in the subject line.
If _everyone_ did this, those with limited time can screen out all such
messages by using the facility on all browsers for this purpose.
This satisfies those who see the list more broadly [or more often] and
have the time to browse all messages.
It takes thought to add "Off Topic", but it is a courteous to others.

Yes, there is someone left to tell the tales. You!
I hope you're taping them or writing them down as your uncles tell them to
you and then repeat them to the next generation.

I am searching for information on the family of James Albert Campbell who
was born February 2, 1858 near Lyons, KS. His parents, John J. Campbell and
Emily Sartin, came to Kansas from Illinois. He married Mary Elizabeth
Milliss Christy May 4, 1882. Their children were Susie(1883), Harriett
(Hattie) (1883), Anna Elizabeth (1885), and Carrie Ethel (1887). Mary
Elizabeth Campbell died in Iola, Allen Co., KS Dec. 1, 1890. They were
living in Bourbon Co. KS . by 1900. James Albert Campbell married Annie
Archer in 1904. He died in K.C., MO June 8, 1940.
I would also like information on his father, John J. Campbell. The 1850
census lists him in Schuyler Co., IL. He was born ca. 1821 in Kentucky. His
wife, Emily Sartin Campbell, was born in Kentucky. Their children included
John M, Sarah R., and Emily S., all born in IL, and James A. born in KS in
1858.
I'd like to contact anyone researching this family. Any help you can offer
will be most appreciated.
Thanks, Kathy

Last year I went to see "THE NEEDFIRE" at the Princess of Wales Theatre
in Toronto, Ontario. For those of you who haven't seen or heard of it,
it is a Celtic Celebration. Stories, singing, dancing & Celtic music.
The write up says:
It was Celtic custom on Beltaine-eve, at the coming of the Spring
Equinox, to extinguish every fire, every candle, every lamp & every
hearth in the community, and then one designated person would kindle a
single, new flame..The Needfire. The head of each household would come
to The Needfire and take from it an ember of coal with which to re-light
the fires in his home.
In the story, as I saw it, the new fire was lit on the beach and
everyone from the community went down to the beach to get the new flame
to take home. While there, they told the old stories, danced the dances
and played the old music.
To me this means that we must constantly tell and re-tell the stories,
dance the dances and play the music. It is not enough to know when
someone was born and died.
So tell your stories and re-kindle the flame. Then leave your Campbell
information.
My Aunt is 87 years old, my Uncles are 78 & 85. I listen when they tell
their stories. They are the last of my late father's siblings and soon
they will be gone, and then there will be no one left to tell the tales.

I am looking for information on Harriet L Campbell, in the 1900 Census of
