I am trying to obtain information on my g-grandfather, Stephen R.
Campbell, from Fleming Co., KY. He died on Jan 16, 1918, at the age of 86
years. He was married four times.
Marriage #1 -- Rua Hinton, on 10 Nov 1852
Children: Charles
Albert Wise
#2 -- Margaret A. Butler, in Mar, 1859
#3 -- Cornelia Overly, on 22 Aug 1861 (my g-grandmother)
Children: Mina ("Minnie") (my grandmother, who married
Isaac Evans in 1883.)
Anna E.
*Cornelia's father's name was Isaac Overly.
#4 -- Elmira Dodge. (Elmira had a son named John by a
previous marriage.)
**On the marriage bond, Stephen R. lists his parents as living in
Lewis. Co.,
KY. I found some info that his father and mother's names
might be Edward and Julia (Griffith) Campbell, but no
documentation of this.
Stephen R. Campbell is buried beside his first wife and son, Rua and
Charles, at Bald Hill Cemetery in Fleming Co., KY.
According to one family story, Stephen R. had a sister and brother who
moved to Waltonville, Illinois. His sister's name was Rebecca.
Any information on my Campbell ancesters would be greatly appreciated,
especially since information on my father's family is very sketchy.
Thank you,
Karen Evans Beal
This is my first post to the Campbell-L. I am researching the following people. I have much information on the Jones family, but nothing beyond the following on my Campbells.
Sarah Ann Campbell married David Colensworth Jones 23 Jan 1851 in Jasper County, Ga. The following were their children or were living with them during census years. Columbus, Carrie, Eugenia, Mary M, Julia Susan, Emma, Willie (William C), Tommie, Sarah Frances. According to Jewel Moats Lancaster's book JASPER COUNTY, GEORGIA, CEMETERY AND BIBLE RECORDS, David and Sarah are buried "on the David Colensworth Jones plantation" off hwy 11. Headstones read "David Colensworh Jones Born Jasper County, Ga 8-1-1823 Died in Macon Hospital 12-14-1864, Sarah Ann Campbell May 10, 1829-June 21, 1886, Married January 23, 1851."
If anyone is familiar with these ancestors, I will appreciate any information you can provide.

I asked Diamrid Campbell to check out the subject site and give us his
opinion. The following is his response:
----------
Ken,
I agree, I couldn't find anything in Campbell tartan. There was a blue
with
double tramlines but the swatch was too small to tell whether it was
similar
to Campbell. Nothing I found in several tries had "Campbell" written on
it.
Only the Black Watch looked any good to Campbells.
At the moment I am not able to reach the List due to new e-mail software
although I can read the material and answer people, but cannot post to
the List. So maybe
you could comment on the message about tartan at LandsEnd for me and
perhaps
ask David for more information..
All best, Diarmid

Dear List,
I just received a recent Lands End catalog and low and behold they had
flannel shirts using the Campbell tartan. Ordered one online at
landsend.com. They had several Scottish clan tartans to choose from...black
watch, Stewart, etc.

Dear Fellow Campbells,
I finally obtained a copy of my father's birth certificate. Maybe I'm just
too excited to think straight but I'm not sure what avenue to look into next.
This is the info I have:
My father Jack Lee Cambpell was born 3-6-36 and the bc says he had one older
brother.
My grandmother was Edna May White from Chalk, TX in Cottle County and her
profession was homemaker.
My grandfather was Jack Lee Campbell Sr. and he was from Lehigh, OK in Coal
County and his profession is listed as truck driver.
The bc says that in 1936 they resided in Lefors, TX in Gray County which is
about 150 miles farther north into the panhandle than is Edna White's birth
town of Chalk.
The next generation all lived and still do in the same 20 mile radius in Gray
County TX.
Now what do I do. I have searched the SSDI but I've no idea which ones may
be mine, if any. None appear to be Gray County TX.
Thanks
Sheila Campell

To Chris Gaunt for the information on the Illinois marriage records--- I did
not find Campbells, but maybe a long lost other thread. I have fired a
letter off today. Illinois is also ahead of the mark with their list of
Civil War soldiers with links to other organizations so that you can e-mail
the state and receive a copy of the (very invormative) enlistment record.

Hello!
I am trying to find the parents of John CAMPBELL, who was born in
1798 (census records state he was born in Maryland or Virginia),
moved to Ross Co., OH, married Mary BRADFORD there in 1826, raised a
family in Highland Co., OH, until about 1857 then moved to Mercer
Co., OH, where he died in 1884.
Accounts of John CAMPBELL's ancestry and early family life are
varied and do not paint a clear picture. Thomas Spooner, in his book
RECORDS OF WILLIAM SPOONER OF PLYMOUTH, MA, states that Mary Sampson
BRADFORD married "John Campbell, son of Enoch and Jane Campbell."
Meanwhile, another family member remembers a story that John CAMPBELL
was from Kingussie [Iverness], Scotland, and his wife, Maggie
MACGLADE was from Buckie, Scotland (these villages are in the Spey
Valley).
I have been able to determine that John and Mary CAMPBELL's children include:
2 - Mary Jane CAMPBELL
Born - 4 Mar 1828 in Highland Co., OH
Mar. - 21 Oct 1857 in Mercer Co., OH.
sp- David EXLINE

Mar. - 5 Feb 1852 in Highland Co., OH

sp- Delilah HILL
2 - Elizabeth A. CAMPBELL
Born - 5 Jun 1832 in Highland Co., OH
Mar. - 1) 6 Jan 1854 in Mercer Co., OH
sp- 1) Andrew TOLAN, Dr.
sp- 2) A.C. VAUGHN
2 - Sarah S. CAMPBELL
Born - 7 Mar 1834 in Highland Co., OH
Mar. - 24 Dec 1857 in Mercer Co., OH
sp- John EXLINE
2 - George W. CAMPBELL
Born - 5 Oct 1835 in Highland Co., OH
Died - 14 Aug 1863 in McMinnville, TN
Buried - Stone River Cem., Murfreesboro, TN
2 - Harriet Frances CAMPBELL

I am researching information on my fathers side of the family:
My grandfather was:
Robert Peel (or Peal) Campbell
born - 06-15-1860 - in Hartford City, Mason County, Virginia
His father was John Campbell, and his mother was Comfort Campbell.
He had a brother - Benjamin Franklin Campbell, born 02-05-1858,
in Mason County, Virginia.
My grandfather married Wiheminia (Mena) Rings - April 4, 1882 in
Mason County, West Virginia, or at least that was the date of the
marriage license.
Mena Rings was born in Mason County, West Virginia in 1864,
and her father is listed as John Rings, her mothers name was
not listed.
Mena had a brother Charles, and a sister Anna, do not know their
births.
Robert and Mena Campbell had by 1884 moved to Blair, Ohio which was
in Portage County (Blair does not exist anymore), and then moved to
Bowling Green, Ohio, in Wood County.
If anyone has any information about Robert Campbell and Mena Rings,
and their families in Virginia / West Virginia, or Ohio, I would really
appreciate it. Would like to have especially any information on their
parents John Campbell, Comfort Campbell, and on John Rings.

Thank you for any help.

Recently I found an entry for my ggg grandfather in the Hawksbill Curch
Record. In it, he is listed as Raben Gemmel. His name was Robert (Robin)
Campbell. Is Gemmel another form of Campbell? Or is it just the way the
recorder wrote it? Most of the people in this church were of German
descent.
To the List:
I have located the will of John CAMPBELL, of Montgomery County,
Tennessee, who died 8 December 1812. His wife, Delila is mentioned but no
children's names.
There is a possibility this man is my great, great, great, great
grandfather. Is anyone on the CAMPBELL list researching this man?

I have just found out that my ggg-grandfather was Archibald Campbell who was born in North Carolina in 1819 or 1820. He migrated to Tennessee and eventually on to Bird Township in Arkansas (west of Swifton). That's where he was living in 1870. He was married to a Narcissa ? from Alabama. She may have been his second wife. His children were Sarah, John P., Archibald, Jane, and William.
John P. was my gg grandfather. Does anyone have any info on this family? I know that John P. settled on the east side of Swifton but we have no record of the rest of his brothers or sisters or any further info on Archibald. Am I related to any of you Campbells out there?
thanks,
Judy

Hellooooo!!!! Are the Campbell's still on line????
Do we only get in gear and on line over Scots verses Scotch, types and colors
in Tartans and Kilts, or heredity factors of the Scots? Don't get me wrong,
it was all very enjoyable and educational but then what? It has been over a
week since much has come through from any Campbell's.
I posted about a week ago and had only one response and that was for a file
check.
Robert J. Campbell and Sarah E. Campbell are my ggrandparents, Frank R.,Clell
D. their Son's and Nellie A. their Daughter.
Who are the others in the Campbell Plot? Or information on any of the
Campbell's would be deply appreciated.
Thanks so much for all the assistants.

Hi, Folks,
Those of you living in the United States may be interested in the article
at: http://www.ancestry.com/magazine/articles/genpower.htm
The author is Dr. John Daly, Director of the Illinois State Archives, and
in it he discusses the combined power the genealogical community might
weld if we put our minds to it. The recent unveiling of the Illinois
Statewide Marriage Index, 1763-1900 at
http://www.sos.state.il.us/depts/archives/marriage.html has made a number
of people wonder, "Why not in my state, too?" It's fairly long, but is
well worth the reading.
BTW, there are Campbells in that database, and you can search on only the
surname. :-)
