Hi Betty,
Thanks for your msg of 22 Oct 98. I have not personally researched this
line; my info comes from Margaret Campbell Pilcher's book and,
unfortunately, she usually did not document the relationships described.
What I have on the line is shown in the Attachment shown below.
I'd be very pleased in receive any info you might have on the family of

I am looking for a Christian Campbell in North Carolina.
She married Duncan McCollum or McCallum about 1791. They had 10
children between 1792 and 1812, all born in North Carolina. The second
child (1794) was born in Richmond County, on the North/South Carolina
border, but we do not know where the
others were born.
We are confident that both Christian and her husband were born in
Scotland but we do not know if they were married before or after they
arrived in
this country.
We have seen her name listed as:
-Christian Campbell
-McIver Christian Campbell
-Christian McIver Campbell
Anybody missing a Christian? She must have been born about 1770.
To: All those interested in the genealogy of the Southwest VA Campbells
I know of no documentary evidence which substantiates the existance of
any of the early Campbells prior to John Campbell (d. 1741), husband of
Grace Hay. Hence, mention of these early Campbell generations should be
carefully qualified. The oldest source, that I have been able to locate,
that discusses these early generations of Campbells, is from a note
written by Governor David Campbell (1779-1859) of VA, found among his
papers.
NOTE OF GOVERNOR DAVID CAMPBELL RE THE ANCESTORS OF JOHN CAMPBELL
Governor David Campbell's papers and other documents are part of the
Campbell Papers Collection (about 8,000 documents) located at Duke
University, Durham NC. A microfilm copy of the Campbell Papers is
located at the Tennessee State Library and Archives in Nashville. In
1996, while reviewing this microfilm copy, I found the following note, in
Governor David Campbell's handwriting, on microfilm reel number one (my
comments are in brackets):
"Genealogy - The Campbell Family
"The farthest back the Campbell family can be traced is to Duncan
Campbell of Inverary, Scotland, the place where the old Duke of Argyle
and most of the Scotch [sic] Campbells lived. It was in the latter part
of Queen Elizabeth's reign that Duncan Campbell moved from Inverary to
Ireland. Not long afterwards, in the reign of James First, when he had
come to the throne, forfeitures were declared at Ulster in 1612, and
Duncan Campbell bought a lease of the forfeited land from one of the
English officers. One of his sons, Patrick, bought out the lease and
estate in remainder, whereby he acquired the [land in] fee simple. How
many other sons Duncan may have had is not known.
"Patrick had a son Hugh, and he a son Andrew. The generations from
Andrew to our great-grandfather John [husband of Grace Hay] are not
stated. It should be to Duncan, father of John Campbell, [who] emigrated
to America with his family in the year 1726 and settled in the Sweet Ara
river where Lancaster now stands in Pennsylvania. He [meaning John
Campbell, husband of Grace Hay] had six sons, Patrick, John, William,
James, Robert and David. Three - to wit - John, William and James were
never married. John died in in England having gone there with Lord Boyne
and became [his] steward."

Phil Norfleet

Hi Margaret,
My understanding is that Robert was the brother of the John Campbell (d.
1741) who married Grace Hay. I have no documentary evidence for this. I
obtained the info from Margaret Campbell Pilcher's book. Unfortunately,
for the most part, she does not provide any supporting evidence for the
relationships she describes.

The line that I am seeking to understand are said to have been
"hereditary Lieutenant Colonels." Can someone enlighten me on this
subject. What does it mean to be an heredity Lieutenant Colonel? What
would be ones responsibilities in this regard? To whom would the title
and responsibilities be passed? I am interested in a Campbell line but
was this done in other Clans also?
These general questions tie back to a specific question that is puzzling
me. I am curious about a William Campbell, the third son of William
Campbell of Wester Kames, Bute, Scotland. William of Wester Kames was
the forth son of Sir Duncan Campbell, Baronet of Auchinbreck. Duncan
Campbell, apparently acting in his capacity as an hereditary Lt. Col.
under the Duke of Argyll lead the Campbell troops in the Battle of
Inverlochy in 1645. (The battle was lost and Duncan was killed.) Three
generations later, in 1689, William Campbell (son of William of Wester
Kames) was a Lt. Col. in the Siege of Londonderry, Ireland. Would this
have been in the capacity of an hereditary Lt. Col. or is it simply a
coincidence?
Given the fact that neither William nor his father were 1st sons I would
doubt that William's title was heredity, but I just don't know.
I await the combined knowledge and wisdom of the Clan Campbell.

Hi Margaret,
Thanks for your msg dated 19 Oct 1998. I do have the line, cited in your
msg, in my Campbell FTM data file - see attachment.
My information on this line comes from the book written by Margaret
Campbell Pilcher (1843-1921) entitled "Historical Sketches of the
Campbell, Pilcher, and Kindred Families." Her book was published in 1911
and copies are available at most major libraries. Mrs. Pilcher, the
daughter of Governor William Bowen Campbell of TN, is the principal,
published historian of the Southwest VA Campbells. I have found
instances where I believe she has made errors, mainly with respect to the
Black David Campbell line. However, she appears to be much more accurate
concerning the White David line. This is mainly because she made
extensive use of the papers of another relative, Governor David Campbell
of VA, a grandson of White David. Governor Campbell of VA was a
meticululous researcher and it is mainly due to his work that the story
of John Campbell and Grace Hay (parents of White David) and their
descendants has survived. Governor Campbell's papers and other documents
are part of the Campbell Papers Collection (about 8,000 documents)
located at Duke University, Durham NC.
I should mention that the early generations of Campbells she cited,
antecedents of John Campbell and Grace Hay, are very suspect. Although
they are included in Mrs. Pilcher's book, I have never known anyone who
was able to find any documentary evidence in support of their existance.
Re the family of Charles Campbell and Mary Ann Downey - I only show a son
named William. I'd be interested in receiving the data you have
regarding their other children.
Thanks,
Phil Norfleet
