John Jasper CAMPBELL
b 28 Dec 1838 in MO
D 12 April 1882, Howell Co, MO
married Nancy Marie Smith (b 18 Nov 1847 ARK, d 24 Sept 1871)
Buried adjacent to the above and quite possibly his parents:
Boyd CAMPBELL, and his wife, Matilda (no dates on stone)
John Jasper named his son James Boyd, which supports the fact that these
graves are at least connected in some way. Additionally, word of mouth
tells me that they were his parents.
After 12 years, I still hope for a breakthrough!

William Campbell was my husbands grandfather. I have found a lot of the
family and their heirs from 1865 to present but its William Campbell's
family that I am having troble with.
William and Agnes Findley Campbell came to the USA thru Canada in 1865.
They settled in PA. William was born in Eaglesham Scotland and was the
son of Duncan and Mary Jolly who had 7 other children. I found the
family on the 1841 census in Eaglesham but can't find them on 1851 at
same location. The other children were John, Charles, Margaret, Duncan,
George, Mary and James. I have traced James up to the last 1891 census
in New Killpatrick but lost him again. I am anxious to trace descendants
of all names mentioned and wish to make contact with any living
relatives.

Hi everyone, I have just subscribed to this list today and am wondering
if anyone has any information on Campbell's from Ireland. I have gone
back as far as Peter Campbell born in around 1834 who married a Bridget
Mary JOSEPH or a Bridget RUSH or possibly he may have married twice. All
documents I have show that he was born in Galway, Ireland and I am led to
believe that this is Galway City rather that Galway.
I attach a file of his decendants in case any one has any information for
me or can offer any assistance or advice.
Thanks for reading this,

Does anyone know anything about the Highland Games this weekend in San
Marcos, California, near San Diego? I've seen the info on the Internet,
but it lacks some important info.
I'm very interested to know:
1. the schedule of events for both Saturday and Sunday.
2. if Alasdair Fraser be playing at all during Sat. and Sun.
3. what the setting is -- fairgrounds-type, hilly park, etc.,
Basically, is it a great location?
4. if there are any campsites nearby.
5. how this rates with the Costa Mesa, Memorial Day Games.
Below, is the beginning of what I found on the Internet:
Thanks.

EVENTS: Athletics, Piping, Drumming, Highland Dance
Rancho Santa Fe Park in San Marcos, California, is once again home for the
24th Annual San Diego Scottish Highland Games on Saturday and Sunday, June
28-29, 1997. It's a beautiful place to spend the weekend, with sights to
see along with a full slate of Scottish Games activities for everyone.
To begin with, the entertainment schedule includes Celtic artists from all
over the world.
I have an old photo of a Henry Campbell who married Ann Callin . Both were
probably born abt 1820 as Ann's brother James Callin was b. 1817 in PA. It
is unknown where this Henry was born but the photo was likely from the New
London, Huron Co.,OH area as that is where many of the other ancestors in
the photo album were located. The photos of Henry and Ann were the
possession of their niece, Mary Ann Callin b. 1840, New London. If this
information rings any bells or is helpful or interesting to anyone, please
contact me. Thank you.
Dear Bev & Kirk:
Yes! There's at least one CAMPBELL buried (I think) in the Toronto area
whose grave (and other info) I would very much like to verify.
He is Archibald (Archie) CAMPBELL, b. 27 Apr 1845, m. Marietta BURK 8 Feb
1871, d. 25 Jan 1913. I believe Archie owned a flour mill in or near
Toronto. I know that he was elected a senator on 22 Nov 1907 and that he
and Marietta owned a big house named "Hazeldene" in Toronto Junction. I
do not know (but would like to learn) where "Toronto Junction" is, but I
suppose that that could be easily determined by anyone in the Toronto
area. I also suppose that it would be relatively easy to research anyone
who has ever been a provincial (federal?) senator.
Archie's and Marietta's six children were:
Flora Maud CAMPBELL, b. 1872, m. Spencer STONE, d. 1969
Helen Ethel CAMPBELL, b. 8 July 1873, m. George Samuel DEEKS,
d. 1 Dec 1946
Mabel CAMPBELL, b. 28 Jun 1878, m. James Emberley WALLBRIDGE
(lawyer in Edmonton, AL), d. 20 Apr 1969
Archie Weir CAMPBELL, b. 16 Mar 1881, m. Eula FOSTER, d. 21 Aug 1943
Douglas Argyle CAMPBELL, b. 24 May 1884, m. Dorothea Owen TURNER,
d. 20 Aug 1950
Norman Howard CAMPBELL, b. 16 Sep 1886, m. Mary Victoria (Queenie)
TURNER.
Archie's seven siblings were:
Isabell CAMPBELL, b. 1836, m. John R. McKINLEY
Flora CAMPBELL, b. about 1838. m. Rev. Colin SINCLAIR
Mary CAMPBELL, b. about 1840, m. Hugh McDIARMID (President of
Bethany College in WV, then of Hiram College in OH)
Malcolm CAMPBELL, b. 11 Feb 1843, m. Sarah Ann CAMPBELL
John CAMPBELL, b. 1847, m. Mary Ann SMITH, businessman in St.
Thomas, ON, d. 1914
James Weir CAMPBELL, b. 1 Aug 1849, m. Catherine Jane CAMPBELL,
killed in accident 2 Dec 1895, b. Greenwood Cem., Ridgetown, ON
Peter N. CAMPBELL, b. 1852, d. 1852 age 3 months
Anything you (or others) know or learn about any of these people would be
of great interest.
FYI, Archie and his siblings were born in Howard Township, Kent County,
Ontario -- near Ridgetown, ON. I am very interested in this line and in
other CAMPBELLS born in and around this township. Many are buried in
Morpeth Cemetery and in Greenwood Cemetery (just outside Ridgetown).
As someone interested in Ontario cemeteries, can you advise me how I
might determine (on-line or otherwise) if these and other Ontario
cemeteries are indexed and, if so, how I might consult the index(es)?
You did not say when you would be visiting graveyards near Toronto. I
in fact plan to visit the two cemeteries mentioned above on or about 24
July 1997. Is this of any conceivable interest to you (or to others
receiving this post)?
Lastly, you ask "is this type of information useful to the discussion
group?" I for one very much think that it is! It's always a roll of the
dice to ask if the Campbells I'm interested in have anything in common
with the Campbells you're interested in. But occasionally we do make
connections. And it's VERY nice of you to offer to help others out when
you're doing research in any particular area.

Seoras, Yes your point is well taken and of course, I misspoke myself when
I said it was *apart* of Highland attire. What I meant to say was (and
I'll quote the late Scotty Thompson on this): "The Cromach - This is the
crook-handled walking stick that is *particulary* suited to use *with*
Scottish attire. (Emphisis mine). In other words, in place of the walking
stick.
Now I have a question for you Seoras. Since you were in a Scottish
Regiment did the officers carry walking sticks like they did in the movie
"Tunes of Glory"? Would these rightfully be termed cromachs? What was the
relationship of carrying the sticks to uniform regulations? What about
swagger sticks?
All the Best!

Yes please! My Great-Grandfather, William Campbell died Aug.4, 1927; my
Great-Grannie (his widow) Agnes Wilson Campbell (nee Hill) died Sept.17,
1957. Both died in Toronto and are buried together in Prospect or Toronto
Cemetary. (My understanding is that both names refer to the same
cemetary?) I have never seen their graves and would LOVE to know what's
written on the markers. I would be SO grateful! Since I live in B.C., I
don't know when or if I'll ever get to see them in person.

And I think this type of info is MOST useful. Thanks again for letting us
know.

Seoras here,
Tom, the 'cromach' is, as you say, a shepher's crook. However, it is not
really part of 'highland attire' as not every Highlander is a shepherd.
Even a shepherd would not carry his crook whilst off duty. This raises
the point that Diarmid made some time ago, that the kilt is not
traditional wear but rather something that can be and is worn as a form of
everyday dress in the same way that trousers can be worn and are worn as
a form of everyday dress - and this is done neither by hook nor crook!
All the best,
Yours aye,
Seoras
I'm looking for more info on Flora Campbell, b. 1743, d.1831. She was
married to William Armstrong, b. 1742. She lived, for a time at least, in
the Indiana/Armstrong County, PA area. It is said that she was the
daughter of the younger son of an Irish nobleman.
Can anyone tell me more about her?

Russell Bruce listed some Campbell ancesters that seemed to be tantilizngly
similar to some names and places that I am searching. I have traced back a
Henry Campbell, born in 1819 in Rutland, Vt. to Daniel Campbell and Lucinda
(last name unknown). No dates on them, but Daniel is listed in the 1820
census in Rutland, Vt. Henry moved to Van Buren Co., Michigan and got
married there about 1839. The family (my line at least) stayed there for
the next 50 years. If any of this sounds like I can help please write.

I am searching for any information on my great great grandparents, Francis
(Frank) Campbell and Carolyn Doty. The only info I have is in bits and
pieces and is as follows:
Frank Campbell supposedly owned a mercantile in somewhere in Kentucky in the
mid-1800's. He had two, possibly three brothers (names unknown) who owed him
some money. One day the brothers took Frank fishing, and they never
returned. It is thought that the brothers may have gone to Kansas....but we
are not totally sure about this. The rumor goes that there may have been
foul play, too. :-) It is believed that he may have died around 1874. His
wife, Carolyn Doty, became a sectionhand for a railroad (mainly she washed
the railroad workers clothes and cooked meals) in order to take care of and
feed their children after Frank disappeared. Carolyn never remarried, and
she died when she was about 98 years old.
Their children are:
Cora Campbell -- spouse unknown. Children: Charlie
Henry Campbell -- spouse unknown. Children: Robert, Frank and Earl
Elizabeth Campbell -- spouse unknown. Children: unknown (if any)
Alethia Campbell -- spouse unknown. Children: Addie and Winnie
Francis Newton Campbell -- spouse Martha M. Booth. Children: Leo, Alberta,
Lloyd, Floyd, Nelda, Richard and Wilda.
All of the children would have been born in the mid to late 1800's and their
children would have been born in the late 1800's to early 1900's.
Any information at all would be wonderful, because this is where my Campbell
heritage stops. I have no knowledge of my ancestry beyond Francis Newton
Campbell, my great grandfather, besides what you have read above.
Thanks, Sandy Campbell (Tamsyn27(a)aol.com)
I am searching for a marriage of Henry CAMPBELL to Ann CALLIN (perhaps

suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.

Yes, but is the term Scottish? I was under the impression it was Irish.
Isn't Cromach the Scottish term for the somewhat longer crook-handled
walking stick that is almost considered "Highland" attire?
