I received an e-mail asking if Frank D. Selph, husband of Maime/Mame
Campbell (1869 - 1954) was a brother of Will Selph, organizer of the
Campbell Cousins Correspondence volumes and author of the Joseph and Ann
Clinch Campbell Geneology Chart that quite a few of us are lucky enough to
have.
Here's my answer:
As you know, Will Selph (1871 - 1941) was the son of Julia P. Campbell (1845
- 1873) and Will Selph (1843 - 1875). The latter reportedly was so poor
that someone donated clothes for him to be buried in. Son Will was raised
by Mary Ann Campbell {Seely} and his sister Jennie was adopted by Jane
Campbell {Tubbs}.
Frank D. Selph (1862 - 1927) was a son of of George W. Selph (1834/5 - ?)
and Mary H. __ (1834/5 - ?). Frank had a brother Fred.
But were Frank and Will cousins? Geo. Selph and his wife were born in NY,
as was the elder Will Selph, but being so close to the border, that doesn't
mean much.
None of the Selph sites I have checked know of these lines of Selphs. It is
very possible that the George and the elder Will were brothers, but at this
point I have no evidence. I don't even know where in NY either came from.
The elder Will was a Civil War veteran who served all the war in the 42nd
PA. In 1860 he was a laborer working for Horace Seeley..
The 1880 census of Nelson shows George Selph as a cooper, who's father was
born in CT and mother in NY. The elder Will Selph is on the 1860 of
Deerfield Twp., but the 1860 census doesn't show parents birthplaces. The
1870 census only shows wheter or not parents were foreigh born. If Will had
lived till the 1880 census that would have helped, but we're out of luck.
