I was ready for some cheering up, after a too exciting day yesterday --
spinning round and round on a two lane road (with oncoming traffic),
before taking a scenic tour of a cornfield and doing a little damage to
a front bumper and more to the driver side door from knocking over a
road sign. No damage to me or anyone else, but I was a little stiff
this AM.
So it was a great treat to get home from work today to find the Tioga
County Historical Society's Bicentennial Calendar -- kindly sent me by
mail list member Ann Lugg. Each month's page has 4 old pictures of
places or people in Tioga Co.'s past. First was a photo of "Nessmuk" --
Geo. Washington Sears. I has seen his canoe in the Adirondak Museum,
Blue Mt. Lake, NY, and was aware of his books on the outdoors, but never
knew he was connected to Tioga Co.
Those who haven't yet seen it, may enjoy the photos of places you
haven't seen for a long time(or perhaps ever) and learning from it. One
photo is a scene of the south side of the "old" Nelson and its Methodist
church before both were relocated. My ggf, Rev. Henry D. Goodrich was
pastor there, as was the late Rev. Paul Huyett, husband of Cousin Thelma
ELLISON Huyett. Some members of our mail list are related to the Tubbs
who owned the "Osceola Blockhouse" shown in the photos and site of a
great open house the 4th Sunday of each June (which usually coincides
with the Owlett Reunion). The photo of the 1908 Mansfield State Normal
School Halloween is too small to tell, but it probably includes my
mother, Jessica HOYT Thompson, Cousin Treva HOOKER Hazlett, and other
relatives.
The Centennial Committee includes Bonelyn Lugg Kyofski, cousin to many
of us, who attended our 2001 reunion. I see the acknowledgments list
includes the Knoxville Public Library, so Ann may have had a hand in it too.
Perhaps some of you will enjoy one as much as I did.
Thanks again Ann for all your help and thoughtfulness.
