We recently addressed prejudice against women circa 1850s & 1860s.
But it brought to mind a piece I read in a Wellsboro paper from the WW1
era. There was a long article about a forthcoming Womens Christian
Temperance Union meeting - the planned program, location, etc. Let's
put aside for the moment the issue of whether or not pro-temperance
Jewish women were welcome --- there weren't Jewish women in most Tioga
Co. communities back then. But the final sentence in the article
grabbed my attention -- "All mothers are welcome."
What does THAT say about women's attitudes toward other women and who
had status back then? At least for the attitudes of the local W.C.T.U.
leaders -- which included some Campbell Cousins.
Please don't shoot the messenger.
On a lighter note, I was amused by an Osceola, PA, news item from the
same period. "Our public schools have closed for a few days on account
of the illness of both teachers."
