Re. hurricane in Louisiana. I have been in contact with Richard Louden and
family in Baton Rouge the last three days--they are fine. They have
refugees in their home, lost power for several hours on Sun., but are
fortunate to have had it restored.

Here's a piece from the Wellsboro Agitator of Wed., Jan. 28,
1893, p3
' LOCAL FACTS AND COMMENTS.
HAPS AND MISHAPS IN THIS COUNTY AND ITS VICINITY
...
--- The following literal copy of a nursing bottle advertisement shows
the necessity of handling language with care"
"When the baby is done drinking it must be unscrewed and laid in a cool
place under a tap. If the baby does not thrive on fresh milk it should be
boiled."'
Perhaps the Agitator, and perhaps other newspapers, were just having fun
and such an ad never actually appeared. It may have been an 1893 version
of an "urban legend." But, like urban legends, it's a good story -- which
is why most of us have been fooled a few times by Internet hoaxes and
urban legends -- they contain a "hook" which we want to believe..
That reminds me of an item I recently read in a newsletter for
genealogists studying the Burdick family world wide. In the last couple
of days, I've run into a bunch of conflicting sources on spelling of
names. E.g. Edd Grant Cloos/Close; or James Edward/Edgar Hazlett. I have
strong doubts of the legitimacy of the following, allegedly written in
1865 for a state census. But I will include it as something many of you
may find amusing, even if made up:
"OCUPSYSHUN - CENCUS TAKER.
I am a cencus taker for the city of Bufflow. Our city has groan very fast
in resent years & now in 1865, it has become a hard & time consuming job
to count all the peephill. There are not many that con do this werk, as
it is nesessarie to have an ejucashun, wich a lot pursons still do not
have. Anuther atribeart needed for this job is god spelling, for meny of
the pephill to be counted can hardley speek inglish, let alon spell there
names."
On a more serious note re the current hurricane. The good news is that
only a few Campbell cousins live on the part of the Gulf coast where it
hit. The last I knew only 2 live in Louisiana, Tim Wright near the coast;
and Richard Louden farther inland. And no Campbell Cousins live in MS, as
far as I know. Best wishes to Tim and Richard and others who were, or
will be, adversely impacted by wind or flooding from this storm.
