Apologies for my error. I used Chris as the starting point (because
starting from memory I that you and he were likely to be of the same
generation. And sure enough, my genealogy database announced that you
and he were first cousins. Then I was interrupted by a phone call, and
still having the '1st cousin' answer in mind, forgot to adjust to give
the answer for you and Amy. So, according to my software, and most
genealogists terminology, you and Amy are 1st cousins once removed and
Amy would be a second cousin of your nephews, nieces and any children
you have. There's a lot of confusion about 2nd cousins, 3rd cousins,
and the various types of "removed"s. That's why I usually try to rely
on my genealogy database to give the "official" answers. But it may
help to think of it as follows: 1st cousins share a common set of
grandparents; 2nd cousins share a common set of great-grandparents; 3rd
cousins share a common set of great-great-grandparents; etc. So, you
can just count how many "words" ('great' or 'grand') are before
'parent'
to have the answer.
One tends to think of all the 1st cousins being of one generation, all
the 3nd cousins being in another, all the 3rd cousins being in another
generation, etc. but through time, and long gaps between an oldest child
and their youngest sibling, that gets out of whack. For example, Tom
Zurflieh and I are very close in age. But his mother, Frances SHEWMAN
Zurflieh, was my 3rd cousin. Without giving away Tom's or my age, I
will acknowledge that he is wiser.
Again, sorry about my error.
Your 3rd cousin 2 times removed, Bill
