In spite of it's focus on hunting, many of you may be interested in
looking at Philip Tome's book, "Pioneer Life: Or Thirty Years a
Hunter". He was one of the first settlers on Pine Creek and served as
an interpeter. He has lots to say on elk, bear, rattlesnakes,
"panthers", and Indians.
It can be found at

There are many intermarriages in Lycoming Co. among TOMEs/TOMBs,
BLACKWELLs, GAMBLEs, CALLAHANs, and a CAMPBELL line that lived in Brown
Twp. and Cammel, PA. Like our early Campbells, that family also must
have pronounced the name CAM-ul, not CAMP-bell, nor CAM-bul.
All us us have Tomb cousins with roots in Lycoming Co. Many of us have
Blackwell cousins that settled there. P84 of the book mentions the
Blackwells' first settlement and its failure.
Unfortunately it's hard to identify many of the people Philip refers
to. E.g. "a man named Blackwell." I have connected some of the names
he mentions to people in my data base.
I only skimmed the 144 pages and have to go back and read it more
carefully. I'm sure many of you will find it very interesting.
