Last week was a great week for the genealogy and history of our family.
I received 3 US Mail envelopes filled with goodies about our family. I'll
write subsequent messages with details of the great things that Thelma
Ellison Huyett and Ann Lugg generously sent. Plus they arrived just before
and just after my birthday (on which I got wiser, but no older). This
message will deal with data that was sent by Audrey O'Hare. Audrey is a
descendant of Vernon Green(e). Vernon and his 2nd wife, their children, and
grandchildren came to many Campbell Reunions have a number of connections.
The 1901 Campbell Reunion's annotations should be corrected to read:
"Mrs Anna Signor - Anna Greene (1873 - 1928). She lived in Elkland, so
perhaps her husband, Fred, was connected to Elkland's Hotel Signor. She was
the daughter of Vernon Green(e) and 2nd wife, Mary Kemp above. Mary was a
sister of David Cook Kemp, 2nd husband of Harriet Campbell, daughter of J-M.
Vernon's 1st wife was Harriet's sister, Emily Campbell.
Master[?] [hard to read] Lawrence Signor - Lawrence K. Signor (1894 - 1908),
son of Anna above."
Here's a correction annotation for the 1904 Campbell Reunion minutes:
"Lawrence Signor - (1894 - 1908), son of Anna Greene, dau. of Vernon and
Mary Kemp Green(e). Mary Kemp was a sister of David Cook Kemp. David and
Veron had previously been brothers-in-law, as David's 1st wife, Harriet
Campbell, was a sister of Emily Campbell, dau. of J-M."
The revised annotations give you the drift, but for those of you interested
in the Kemps, or the James Campbell - Mary Blackwell line, here's a little
more on Vernon Green or Greene (it appears both ways for him, but settled
down to Greene for later generations).
Emily Campbell was born March 16, 1837, in Nelson. Vernon, 1830 in
Susquehanna, PA.
In the 1855 census of Dix Twp., Schyuler Co., Emily was living with her
sister, Mary Campbell and husband Benjamin Parks. Martha Parks {later Pratt}
was 2, Frances Parks {later m. Tommie Campbell} wasn't born till Aug. 12;
and James Parks wasn't born till 2 or 3 years later. Also listed in that
household was "Vernon Green, servant".
Emily's older sister, Harriet Campbell's first husband was Robert Parks, by
whom she had a daughter, Helen Parks. I don't know if Robert Parks was any
relation to Benjamin Parks.
Emily and Vernon married March 20, 1875. They had two children before Emily
died Jan. 17, 1861: Edgar was born in 1857 or 1858 and died 1859; and
Edward or Edwin, b. Dec.1859. On Nelson Twp. census records he is shown as
Edwin, but appears as Edward in the Beechers Island Presb. Church records
and in the Campbell Reunion minutes. We don't know what happened to him.
The 1903 Campbell Reunion records mention that Ed C. Green sent a letter of
regret from "300 miles north of Resolution Bay in Alaska." He gave one of
the speeches at the 1929 Campbell Reunion, but little is currently known of
him.
On May 6, 1866, Vernon married Mary Kemp (1834 - 1919). As mentioned above,
she was a sister of David Cook Kemp (1831 - 1929), who on Sept 2, 1954
became Harriet Campbell's 2nd husband.
Vernon and Mary had two children: Frederick Kemp Greene(1870 - 1936), b. NY;
and
Anna Greene (1873 - 1938), b. in MN.
As far as we know, Anna's only child was Lawrence Signor, who died young.
Perhaps some of you have some more knowledge of Fred Signor or Edward Greene
to share with us.
I didn't know it at the time, but I often took a route when commuting by
bicycle a few years ago that took me past the Elmsford, NY, cemetery where
Frederick Kemp Greene is burried. He came from NYC to attend several
Campbell Reunions. Thanks to his descendant, Audrey O'Hare, we now have
names and dates for his descendants, down to the most recent generation.
It's great to see so many names added to our family tree. Some of you saw
the one I printed out and hung on the gym wall at the 2000 Owlett Reunion.
At the rate we're finding additional cousins, we will need a bigger wall the
next time.
Thank you Audrey.
