How about sharing with us a childhood memory of Thanksgiving? A
particular person at the table, a traditional dish, a special place in
your memories, or one distinct Thanksgiving day that stands out in your
memory.
I don't have any one Thanksgiving day that stands out in my memory, food
dishes aren't that important to me (tho I do memember one dish that
tended to be associated with my mother;s Thanksgivings - a huge Hubbard
squash). And there were always pies. Pumpkin for sure. Maybe
mincemeat, apple or berry in addition. Sometimes corn pudding, bread
pudding, Indian pudding or an "Apple Betty" were also on the menu.
Sometimes the main dish was ham, but I do recall going to a nearby
poultry farm where my father would pick out a live turkey, which the
farmer would dispatch and dip in hot or boiling water before plucking.
Sometimes the plucking happened at home, but there were always
pin-feathers to remove.
The main thing that sticks in my mind was mom's hospitality. Sometimes
money was scarce, but there was always food to share on the major
holidays. Elderly neighbors or friends that would have been alone for a
holiday, were always included My frequently grumpy father would often
make an hour's drive playing taxi to bring people to the house - without
any grumbling that I noticed. Sometimes the menu was more modest than
others, but there was always warmth, welcome, friendship and a joy in
sharing what they had. Not a bad legacy.
