Mary and I has a brief but pleasant visit from Marylyn this
afternoon. We made a quick visit to Staples to make copies of
stuff for each other.
While visiting Cousin Paul Miller, she acquired a goodie - a
picture of the 1942 Campbell Reuion. On the back was an
inscription from their grandmother, Mary Agnes "Mayme" HAZLETT
Dewey. It reads:
"This is the last reunion of the Campbell family taken at Nelson
Pa. on the school grounds after 50 years, Aug. 20, 1942. So few
of us! Sara and I went but none of the younger people seem to
care so this is the last. Clyde has gone on, and so many who
have gone over the 50 years - Father & Mother are in the one
taken in 1912 - Mayme"
'Sara' was her sister, Sarah Elaine HAZLETT Baumgarten.
'Clyde' was Campbell reunion president Clyde W. CAMPBELL, who died shortly before
that reunion.
'Father & Mother' were Samuel Clark HAZLETT and Catherine BRENNAN.
Marylyn recognized Mayme and Sara in the photo. What a shame
that the late Betty ELLIOT Campbell, Clyde's daughter-in-law who was at that
reunion and our 2001 reunion is no longer with us to
identify the people. Ditto for the late Robt. Sherer Lugg, who was also at
the 1942 reunion. Fortunately some older cousins are
still with us, such as Cousin Iva, who may recognize most of the
rest.
And Tom, Marylyn didn't forget you. She made a photo paper copy for you to
scan.
I gave Marylyn copies for herself and for Cousin Rhonda Roberts of the program
for the Organ Dedication, Beechers Island
Presbyterian Church, Nelson, PA, from Sunday, May 26, 1963.
It has a picture of the church on the cover, looking just like I
remember it. The program started an organ prelude played by Mrs.
Ila Wiley. Those of you who knew Nelson are aware of her efforts that resulted
in a portion of the town being saved from the
bulldozer. She was one of my mother's first students, and the
mother of Bonelyn and Tony Lugg, who came to our 2001 reunion and
added a lot.
Also featured on the program was a duet by Mrs. Ida Watkins & Dr.
Eugene Watkins. Some of you may recognize him as "The Singing
Dentist", joined by his mother, Cousin Ida. I hope she can join
us this year - maybe Rhonda can bring her. Cousin Ida may be a
big help with identifying the folks in the 1942 photo.
On the back were mentions of:
Choir Director - Mac Owlett (uncle of Franklin, "Peg" and the
late Marian, all of whom came to our reunion).
Session Members Mr. Marion Croft (as far as I know unrelated),
Mrs. Lillian Preston (Lillian Losey, niece of Susan LOSEY Seely),
Mrs. Grace Kirk (?), Mr. Max Chilson (husband of Cousin Leona
KEMP), Mrs. Ila H. Wiley, and Dr. J. Ross Wiley.

descendants are either Hazletts, Luggs, or Bells & E. A. was a

& 1 Bell daughter-in-law)

the initials of either
Mr. & Mrs. James Watkins & family - Gene's brother
Enjoy your copy of the program Rhonda. Lots of your family on it.
One moral of the story is that by 1963, Nelson apparently had a
number of residents who were not Campbell relatives. Even tho
he "new" Nelson has a small population, Campbell cousins make an
even smaller percentage these days. We hope they will
all come this year and not be scared away by the weather as many
were in 2001.
Someone out there must have an almanac that promises us good weather this time.
Safe trip Marylyn, hope to see you on your return trip or at the Owlett Reunion.
