Another "new cousin" contact. I heard from Mary Alice WEEKS Gurnsey,
granddaughter of two Campbell Cousins -- Clara J. Eaton (1891 - 1997)
and William Blaine Merritt (1884 - 1939). Maybe we can count her twice
when tallying up descendants of Joseph and Mary Harpur Campbell. In
addition, Clara was a Blackwell and William a Hazlett. It will be great
getting acquainted with her. And she may be a link to getting in touch
with her siblings and 1st cousins. Hopefully many of them will join us
at our 2008 Campbell Reunion (or perhaps 'Re-union', to keep Will
Selph's ghost happy if it's hovering somewhere in cyberspace).
The new parameters I've been using in uploads of our Campbell
Descendants Family Tree seem to work OK. No complaints so far. Todays
upload contained 4368 individuals and 2063 marriages of people connected
in one way or another to Joseph and Mary Harper Campbell. Most of the
newly added names were Blackwells or Luggs.
Computer Security Note 3. (Ignore if not of interest)
Anti-Virus Software.
Probably the most important part of keeping your computer secure (and
thus protecting the rest of us you correspond with) is anti-virus
protection. Almost all newly sold computers these days come with a free
one year subscription to one of several major anti-virus software
vendors. When that subscription runs out, it's important to renew the
subscription, or replace it with service from a competitor -- OR get a
good, free anti-virus program.
New viruses come out all the time. Having anti-virus software is
essential, but doesn't do any good if you don't check for updates
frequently and run the software regularly so that all know viruses are
detected and deleted or quarantined. Commercial anti-virus companies
often issue updates weekly. Free anti-virus vendors sometimes issue
updates often, even more than once a day. If you are on a DSL or cable
connection, you can probably set your anti-virus software to
automatically check for updates and schedule that to run when your not
using your computer. I'm even so paranoid that in addition to my
automatic daily check for anti-virus updates, I also check for updates
each time before I start up e-mail.
Even if you religiously keep your anti-virus software updated, it still
has to be run regularly. I have mine set so that it automatically
checks all incoming and outgoing e-mail messages for viruses, AND
automatically check ALL files for viruses daily. That check can take a
lot of time, but can be scheduled to run at a time when you won't be on
your computer.
Best of all, messages you receive from RootsWeb's mail lists are
filtered in a way that makes it highly unlikely you will ever get
infected by a virus through a message sent by their mail servers.
