The following message is a minor rewrite of one I sent out to our
Facebook group a little while ago. and many of you will have already seen.:
Several people have suggested setting up a modern
Correspondence Club so that we can exchange letters similar to
the ones in the CCC volumes. Like the originals, it could help
us get to know each other better, and could also provide an
archive later generations would enjoy. I believe most would
prefer that the letters be private, only viewable by
participating family members who joined the Correspondence
Club. Many of you won't want to participate --- that's OK.
But for those of you who are interested, the current thinking
is the best way to achieve privacy, accessibility, and ease of
use is via a private blog. Several have suggested
WordPress.com. If we use their free service you'll see ads, as
we do on Facebook, Google, or when viewing our family tree.
The letters would be on the web, but access would require both
signing up for a free WordPress account (with its own
password) and also subscribing to our Correspondence Club.
Non-subscribers would not see them (although nothing is 100%
hacker proof). I've used WordPress and it allows you to either
type documents on it's site, or type a document on your
computer and upload the file. We could allow subscribers to
comment on each others' letters.
What do you think? You can reply to the list or privately to me.
