Judy Hazlett Abel kindly notified me of the death Oct 6, of Cousin
Clifford S. "Dusty" Merritt, Jr. You can see his obit at
www.the-leader.com/articles/2007/10/08/obituaries/death_notices/death04.txt.
Calling hours will be this afternoon in Elkland and the funeral this
evening.
On
www.star-gazette.com you can find an obit for his wife, Beverly
McCarthy Merritt.(1/20/1930 - 8/6/2007).
Both were well respected in the community and will be missed by their
many friends. I had the privilege of visiting them in their lovely old
home a couple of times and have fond memories of their hospitality.
Dusty came to our 2003 reunion. I never saw him pitch, but Dusty won
many games. Both were involved in many civic activities. He was born
on the farm that Sam Hazlett bought from Daniel Strait and where the
original Campbell-Hazlett burial ground was located (before the graves
were relocated to the Nelson Cem. by the Cowanesque Lake Project).
Dusty was a son of Esther E. Freeberg (1897 - 1931) & Clifford S.
Merritt, Sr. (1901 - 1988); son of Ellen L. Stoddard (1869 - 1933) &
Chas. Fowler Merritt (1855- 1916); son of William Merritt (1821 - 1898)
& Eliza Ann Hazlett (1825 - 1899); dau. of John Hazlett (~1787 - ?) &
Jane Campbell (1792 - 1832).
