On this Memorial Day, my thoughts naturally go to cemeteries and early
childhood memories of Nelson's Decoration Day.
And I'm sure we all had thoughts about the sacrifices men and women in
the armed services have have made in our behalf -- both those who came
back from war and those who didn't. The physical and psychic scars some
carried for the rest of their lives.
But I also got to thinking about cemetery visits in conjunction with our
next reunion. They have been quite popular with those from out of the
area. We've done Nelson Cem. a couple of times, Osceola/Fairview once,
and some did Lawrenceville and Riverside in Knoxville.
There are so very many Tioga and Steuben County cemeteries that have our
relatives. Baxter Cem. just over the line, Highland in Elkland,
Prospect in Mansfield, several in Farmington Twp., Middlebury Union, and
on and on. If we knew in plenty of time in advance who was coming from
out of the area, we could custom plan some cemetery visits that would
maximize their kin. But we rarely know who will or won't show up.
Any favorite cemeteries you would like to suggest for tours next year?
