Thought I would respond on list to an e-mail from a subscriber about
some Hazletts living in Huntingdon, PA. It seemed like a good excuse
for a recap of what we know of "our" Hazletts.
As you may know, Huntingdon is on US 22 and the Juniata River, by the
border of Huntingdon & Blair Counties, 30 some miles south and a little
west of State College. To the best of my knowledge, none of "our"
Hazletts settled there, but some might have -- there are some big gaps
in my Hazlett knowledge.
As those of you who have done Hazlett genealogy know, it's difficult in
PA, because so many different Hazlett families came to PA from Scotland
and Ireland at different times and settled in different areas - many
much earlier than ours. Some seem to have stayed near Philadelphia.
Others in York, Lancaster & Cumberland Counties. And many were among
the early settlers in Alegheny and Washington Counties in the South West
of the state. Mercer Co., in N.W. PA also got a number of Campbells and
Hazletts, but none are related to us that I know of.
Julius Ceasar began his book with "All Gaul is divided in three parts"
-- and that describes our Hazletts.
Most of you are aware of the brothers Samuel and John, originally of
Scotland, who came to Nelson in 1811 with the family of Joseph and Mary
Harper Campbell and married daughters Sarah (Sally) and Jane. I have a
fairly good handle on most of their descendants. Sam & Sally "only" had
7 children compared to John and Jane's 8, but there now seem to be a lot
more descendants of Sam & Sally than of John and Jane.
But they had a brother Archibald, a sister Mary, and a mother - all of
whom came to the US later, and settled in Allegheny Co. I know nothing
more of them or what happened to them. They could have progeny most
anywhere. No idea if they had any children.
Part 3 of our Hazletts is the John Hazlett (1783 - 1869) of Lancaster
Co., originally from Ireland, twho married Sarah and Jane's sister, Mary
Campbell (1779 - 1824). We don't know if he was related to Tioga
County's Sam and John. They had 10 children. After Mary's death in
Lancaster Co., John and his children moved to a farm in Allegheny Co.,
near that of Mary's brother, John Campbell (1781 - 1866). As Pittsburgh
grew and swallowed their farm, some moved to nearby Butler and Fayette
Counties; some moved to other parts of Allegheny Co. I have limited
info on 3 more generations of John and Mary Campbell Hazlett's desc. I
hope to do some research on my next trip to Pittsburgh.
Perhaps some of you will decide to help research our "missing" Hazletts
