In conjunction with our planned Campbells of Nelson website, I figured
we needed to have a family tree on-line that people could navigate when
reading our old letters, etc.
And altho the quality of the data is sometimes questionable, I have
found RootsWeb's World Connect family trees a useful way of contacting
other researchers -- sometimes helping them, sometimes receiving useful
information from them.
So -- I'm publishing a tree not only for our own use, but in the hopes
that other membrs of our family will "find" us if they search on family
members.
RootsWeb's software tries to protect the privacy of living people. But
I wasn't sure how well it worked, so I have tried to protect privacy by
creating a new database for publishing that already protects privacy.
In what I sent them, I am 'LIVING Thompson' and my wife 'LIVING
Hammond'. Thus I applied a privacy filter amnually, and RootsWeb
applied a privacy filter automatically It may several trial and error
efforts to get the combination of filters let the right amount of data
through.
In most cases, people with living parents are not even in the database
I'm sending. If you don't find yourself, either I have kept you out to
be cautious or their filters kept you out in an attempt to protect your
privacy. As I get more familiar with how their software filters out and
changes names, I may be able to relax about what I send them. On the
other hand, if you think your privacy has been violated, or I have
misclassified someone as dead who is in fact living, please let me know.
I hope it will lead to our known family growing a lot -- and bigger
reunions.
To find it go the
www.rootsweb.com. Under the heading Search Engines
and Databases, click on "WorldConnect Project.(Family Trees)". Then, in
the box marked Databases, enter "capane", and click on GO. This was my
first try, so subheadings will later be added to:
a) thank those who shared their data and made it possible;
b) warn people that the data may contain errors;
c) welcome additions and corrections; and
d) solicit mail from family members.
If you're curious about our family tree, take a look and let me know
what you think.
Thanks go to all those who have contributed their data and time to this
effort. Itr was a labor of love, only made possible by the generosity
of so many sharing their data with me.
TheWorld Connect search indexes may not be updated till tonight. After
that, anyone searching on "Mary Harper", "Archibald Hazlett",
"James
Cook", or whatever, will see entries for our database that match their
search criteria. A lot of our entries have not been on World Connect
before -- people who searched for them came up "empty". I hope to hear
from many "new" family members who "discover" us via this route.
