Subject: [Ca-Pa-Ne] Merritt Mitchell's Birth & Ancestry
A recent set of photos from Cousin Tom Zurflieh, who many of you know,
prodded my thoughts about Merrit M. (Merwin or Mervin( Mitchell, first
husband of Cousin Ruth Campbell (1895 - ?) --- daughter of Cousins Thomas
Clinch Campbell and Frances M. Parks.
I had never succeeded in finding him on a census and did not know when or
where he was born, or who his parents were. But I got thinking that now that
the 1940 census records were available, success might be possible at last.
At first I had no luck. But when it hit me that the name of their younger
son, Vernon, was uncommon, I hit paydirt.
I knew that Merritt, Ruth, and their two sons, Robert and Vernon, lived in
Rochester, Monroe Co., NY in 1923 & 1924, where he managed a chain of movie
theaters --- then moved to St. Pete.
And that in 1933 Ruth was living in Tioga, PA, and in 1936, Ruth married
Richard Henry Edward Jones. But I didn't know if they'd divorced or if
Merrit Mitchell had died.
The 1940 census of the Town of Irondequoit, Monroe Co., NY has a Merritt
Mitchell, 42, b. NY, lived there in 1935, owner operator of a movie theater;
with wife Jean, 21, b. Canada; & son Vernon, 19, b. NY.
The 1930 census of Ward 30, Chicago, Cook Co., IL, has a Merritt Mitchell,
32, single, b. NY, employed at RCA.
For some reason, perhaps a spelling error on the part of the enumerator or
the transcriber, I still didn't find them in 1920.
But the 1915 NYS census of Ward 18, Rochester, has a Merritt M. Mitchell,
17, living with Charles M. Mitchell, 44, letter carrier; and Florence A.
Mitchell, 38, housewife ---- all born in the US.
The 1910 census of Ward 18 in Rochester has Merritt M. Mitchell, grandson,
12, b. NY, father b. MI, mother b. VT Charles M. Mitchell, son-in-lawm 39,
b. MI, father b. MI, mother b. NY, letter carrier Florence A. Mitchell,
daughter, 31, b. VT, father b. VT, mother b. VT Soult N. Parker, head, 54,
b. VT, father b. VT, mother b. VT, carpenter & Lucy M. Parker, wife, 51, b.
VT, father b. VT, mother b. VT
The 1900 census of Town of Sodus, Wayne Co., NY has:
Charles M. Mitchell, head, b. Dec. 1870, MI Florence A. Mitchell, wife, b.
Dec. 1878, VT & Merritt M. Mitchell, son, b. Oct 1897 in NY.
The WW1 draft registration for Monroe Co., NY shows Merritt Mervin Mitchell,
b. Oct. 11, 1897, and married to Ruth.
I'm satisfied that it all fits together.
I still don't know when Merritt or Ruth died. Or who Merritt's 2nd wife was.
If any of you find those answers, please let us know, Thanks.
