Many of our Hazlett list members will be delighted to hear about a
fantastic scrapbook I just received from Pat Eierman about the Oakden
family. We owe Pat a large debt of gratitude.
I was always intrigued by a picture of Hollis Oakden in my ggm Phebe
CAMPBELL Hoyt's photo album and wondered if he was related any way,
perhaps back in England. I knew he was a friend of the family. And I
knew, as several of you did, Doretta Mae Oakden (1895 - 1979), wife of
Geo. Gersham Hazlett (1891 - 1966).
Th scrapbook contains lots of material on the Oakdens in England, but
not hint of any connection there that I noticed. It's full of family
data sheets, trees, ship's passenger list, photos, obits, and
letters. There are 3 letters from Doretta, all signed "Doda". I was
surprised to see in one a reference to Alma E. GOODRICH Smith (1864 -
1951), whom I remember. Alma was a 1st cousin of my grandmother,
Frances GOODRICH Hoyt.
Below is a news clipping about Doretta's mother-in-law, who was born
in 1874.
