In reading the obit of Ida PAUL Hazlett in the Wellsboro Gazette of
Thursday, June 26, 1930, p1 via Green Free Library's digital archives, I
was puzzled by once again seeing a newspaper refer to as "Mrs. Bertha
Hazlett."
The obit gives Ida Paul's birthplace as Germany, but at the time of her
birth it was Baden. Coupling her age of death with census data gives
1849 as her birth year. She died June 22, 1930 at her home on "upper
Main street" in Wellsboro. This was probably 127 Main St. Other
newspaper articles show that her brother's name was William Adolph Paul.
The obit mentions that Ida lived in NYC before coming to Wellsboro
"Sixty-four years ago"; was active in the First Presbyterian Church, and
buried in the Wellsboro Cemetery. It doesn't mention her son, James
Hazlett, Jr., b. Jan 3, 1874 in PA, but died Sep 26, 1899 in a tragic
accident working on a RR in Altoona, PA, leaving a widow, the former
Jane Kane.
Ida's obit does mention her daughter, granddaughter, and
great-granddaughter, all living with her at the time of her death. Her
daughter, Bertha Hazlett, was b. March 15, 1868 in Wellsboro and died
there April 16, 1965. Bertha's obit has her m. 1886 to Grant Milliken,
who died abt 1889. On April 28, 1893 in Wellsboro, Bertha m. Elmer
Ellsworth Blanchard, b. Apr 25, 1868 in Montoursville, Lycoming Co., PA,
d. Jan 17, 1948 in Wellsboro. I was puzzled because I see early
references to her as "Miss Bertha Hazlett" and later ones as "Mrs.
Bertha Hazlett", not as "Mrs. Miliken" or "Mrs. Blanchard". At
first I
wondered if there was a third marriage I didn't know of. But it seems
that Bertha and Elmer divorced and that she reverted to her maiden
surname, and kept the "Mrs." because of having a daughter. I don't have
any data on a divorce, not a date for Elmer's 2nd marriage, to Mildred
Morey of Bennezette, Elk Co., PA. However Mildred died in 1923 and
Mildred's children, Twila Mae BLANCHARD Smith, and Elmer, Jr, both
deceased, were born in 1913 and 1919 respectively. Presumably Bertha
and Elmer were divorced by 1912.
In Ida's obit, Bertha's dau., Velma Blanchard (1894 - 1973) is referred
to as Mrs. Henry Ogden. At the moment, I don't have dates or parents
for Henry. And Velma's daughter, Elizabeth OGDEN Youdas (5/23/1920 -
8/12/1976) appears as "Betty Ogden". Betty has two living children, and
at least two living grandchildren.
