Possibly Rhoda English Ladd, the noted area genealogist could shed some light on the
family......????
Just a thought.,,,,,
My grandfather Guy H Dewey Sr worked for Glenn Curtiss and my dad was born in
Hammondsport, (on Vine Street--not far from where he worked--in those days. Now the Glenn
Curtiss Museum is out in a field a little more remote form the original factory.
There have been a bunch of VETERANS in this family tree, for sure!
God bless us all--and the ancestors who got us here!

TV stations and newspapers have been running lots of stories about
veterans for Memorial Day -- as is appropriate. But I recently ran into
stories about Tioga Co.'s Lt. Col. Dean Ivan Lamb --- who may be
connected to some of us.
The earlies clipping I found so far is from the Wellsboro Agitator of
Mar 29, 1916, p2, which had:
"-Dean Lamb, of Armenia Mountain, about six miles from here, and son of
Mr. and Mrs. Henry Lamb, is with the allies, an aeroplane gunner for the
French. Dean acquired proficiency at managing a flying machine while a
student of Glenn Curtis, at Hammondsport.-Covington Sun."
As you will see, he later said he'd flown for the British in WW1, and
may have served both -- he seems to have gotten around.
The next piece is from the Wellsboro Gazette of Feb 15, 1968, p2. It has
a reference to a civil war in Mexico, and says:
"~ First recorded aerial combat occurred in November or December,
1913. Phil Radar flying for General Huerta, and Dean Lamb flying for
General Carranza exchanged about 12 pistol shots."
Later, the Wellsboro Gazette ran a three part story about Lamb's life I
can't include the accounts in this posting because of copyright
restrictions, but you can find them at
http://greenfreelibrary.newspaperarchive.com/PdfViewer.aspx?img=12324448&...
for June 19, 1991, p16;

for Jun2 26, 1991, p21; and

for July, 3, 1991, p24.
The 3 part series was written after Lamb's death, apparently based on
memoirs he'd written. How accurate the autobiographical stories were, I
have no idea, but they are interesting stories of an unusual "soldier of
fortune" or mercenary.
Some of you may have connections to airplane pioneer Glenn Curtiss, who
is mentined in the accounts.
Dean Lamb was a son of a Henry Lamb and Viola English. But a Henry Lamb
of about the same location and area was married to a Hannah Blackwell.
I'm not sure if the two Henry Lambs are the same person. Nor how Hannah
Blackwell fits in.
Perhaps some of you can shed some light on this.
There's another possible connection. As mentioned above, Dean Lamb's
mother was a Viola English. I don't know if it the same person, but a
Viola English married Darius Darling and was the mother of Theodore
Staley Quay/Guy Darling., who married Doris Edna Wetherbee.
Theodore and Doris had a dau., Joanne Adel Darling, who's 1st husband
was James William Olmstead, who was a des. of William Perrin Blackwell
and of some Campbells of Cammal. Lycoming Co., PA. Theodore and Doris
also had a son, James Briggs Darling, who m. a Beula Laura Campbell.
Beulah is not one of "our" Campbells, but I have not yet researched her.
