Today I found a treasure trove when unpacking a box that I think was
packed in 1980, several moves ago.
One item in it was a letter written December 18, 1972 to my parents,
from Edward Harrison Hills, Jr., b. 1/1/1918, d 9/12/1996 in Endicott,
Broome Co, NY. It contained a clipping of Myra Campbell's obit, as well
as news of several relatives..
"Junior" was a son of Edward Harrison Hills, b. 9/14/1890 in Wellsboro,
PA, d. April 1968, in Johnson City, Broome Co., PA and Eva May/Mae
Hooker, b 4/8/1885 in Nelson, PA, d. 9/4/1971 in Johnson City. I knew
Ed, Eva, "Junior", and his wife, Virginia, from the time I was little
till they died. Eva was a dau. of Wm Hooker (1858 - 1925) and Stella
Ann LOOP Hooker Wilbur (1863 - 1933). Stella was a dau. of James Wm.
Loop (1842 - 1912) and Maria B. Campbell (1842 - 1873). Maria was a
dau. of Joseph Campbell (1793 - 1864) and Ann Clinch (2804 - 1872).
Here's the letter, with my additions in brackets - []:
"Dear Jess and Walter,
Was glad to hear from you. I am working in West Endicott [NY] still
making shoes [at Endicott-Johnson Shoe Co.]
Pretty cold today and windy. Anne and Buck are home for Xmas. Jack
will come up for the day.
Here is a clipping of our relative [Myra L.Campbell]. Remember the Rev.
Butler. He came to last reunion (Campbell) at Nelson I have met her
[Myra L. Campbell] and been to their house in Thompson, PA. You will
probably know more about it.
Tell Walter we have a new ice skating rink down here. Bring his skates
and we will play hockey. Ha Ha. Lots of Xmas lights around. I got a
card from Dutch and Olive, also Enoch and Cora. Myra Buck wrote. She
is spending Xmas in Alabama [with] Betty's son. He is in Air Force.
Will try to see you sometime. So long for now.
Yours
Ed Hills"

Full dates and places for births, deaths, and marriages are available
for many of the above. I left them out so as not to be TOO tedious and
long winded. If readers want additional details for any of the above,
contact the list. Some are still living, or their widows are. Happy
updates to your data bases.
How wonderful that the story can be seen at rootsweb about our Enoch
Blackwell and others involved in "The English Settlement". I look forward to checking
it out right after replying to Bill Thompsons posting. I happen to be a
descendant of the elder Enoch Blackwell through his daughter, Mary Blackwell (by
his second wife, Sarah LUGG Clinch Blackwell Campbell), who married James
Campbell. Bill has recounted the charming and interesting story of Ann LUGG
Campbell and Mary BLACKWELL Campbell (half sisters) and how they happened to marry
brothers, Joseph and James Campbell, respectively. I'm sure that most of you
have heard the story, but perhaps there are new members to the list who would
enjoy hearing the history.?
Betty Davis Phillips
Chapter 40, Morris Township, of Brown's 1897 History of Tioga County,
Pennsylvania, has just been put on line and can be seen at
www.rootsweb/~srgp/1897/ch40.htm
It makes a brief mention of immigrant Enoch Blackwell's involvement in
"The English Settlement", and discusses him more under the discussion of
the village of Blackwells. As many of you know, he was born about 1764
in Avening, Gloucestershire --- not "Haven Parrish". And as stated,
died 1816 in Jersey Shore, PA. He was the father of Mary Blackwell
(1806 - 1863), wife of our James Campbell (1798 - 1865). He was also
the step-father of Ann Clinch (1804 - 1872), wife of our Joseph Campbell
(1793 - 1864). Mary and Ann's mother, Sarah LUGG Clinch Blackwell
Campbell (1771 - 1867). was Enoch's 2nd wife. His first wife, who's
name is usually given as Hannah Perrin, was born 1767 in Minchinhampton,
Gloucestershire, and died in Gloucestershire before the Blackwells (and
Clinches) emigrated in 1804. He was joined by his 6 children from his
first marriage and by a number of his siblings.
So far it appears that the Blackwells settled primarily in three areas
(after the English Settlement fiasco). Most lived in Morris Twp., Tioga
Co. Sarah Lugg's children -- Ann BLACKWELL Campbell and Enoch Blackwell
(1814 - 1884) lived in Nelson, Tioga Co. Most of the others settled in
Burlington Twp., Bradford Co., PA. Blackwells form all three locations
came to the Campbell reunions, even though they were not Campbell
descendants. They were still considered "family". Papers on Blackwell
genealogy were presented at Campbell Reunions.
Some of our subscribers are descendants of the elder Enoch Blackwell,
often called "Enoch Blackwell, Sr." -- although it seems there were
countless Enoch Blackwells thru the many generations since.
Feel free to discuss Blackwell genealogy on this mail list.
As those who regularly check the "What's New" section of Joyce Tice's
Tri-County web site know, the 1870 census of Nelson Twp. was just posted on
http://www.rootsweb.com/~srgp/censust/1870ne01.htm
There may be another part yet to come, because there seem to be names
missing. Below are some annotations I have made about"connections".
Please make additions or corrections. I hope some of you will be
pleasantly surprised by them. And perhaps some of you can pleasantly
surprise the rest of us with some I've missed.

From Bill T.
As you know, all the Horton branch of our family are desc. of Almyra
KNOX Horton (1815 - 1887).Almyra's youngest aunt, Dolly (or Polly or
Mary) Knox (1818 - 1875) m.John E. White (1809) - 18984). Perhaps one
of our readers can tell us if John's mother Sarah Bottum (1776 - 1813)
is related to any of our Bottoms or Bottums.
Does this mean Dolly was a daughter of Almyra? Almyra born in 1815 and Dolly born in 1818????
Almyra's uncle, James Knox (1800 - 1880) was the father of Harriet Knox
who married Peter Bosard. Rieta may have dates for Harriet and can tell
us Peter's connection to her Bosard ancestors.
I have William as being the father of Dolly Knox. John Erasatus White was later married (Sep. 23, 1832) to Minerva Baker and had three children by her. Minerva was a younger sister of my gg grandfather on my dad's side.
Peter Bosard b:1826 was a younger brother of Malciah DePoi Bosard (1822-1864) who married (1848) Eleanor Campbell (1828-1910) Eleanor & Malciah were my gg grandparents. I have no death date for Peter and no family listed. I would appreciate any info anyone is will to share. If this is the same Peter Bosard I did not know his wife was Herriett Knox.
I have an Archibald Knox md: to Caroline Scott with no dates---I have an Archibald Knox md: to Julia A White, with no dates. Archibald & Julia had a dau. Laura b: 1853. Laura md: John C White in 1878 and had a son J Archie White b: 1887. John C White is the son of John Erastus White and Dolly Knox.
Hope this helps someone,
