In looking at old photos of Campbell Reunions, I don't detect any one "Campbell
look". But there do seem to be some strong characteristics that show up in
clusters.
It came to me today as I was moving some papers. I noticed a photo sent by
cousin Anne Seely Smouther of Samuel Allen Seely (1883 - 1961), one of the CCC
letter writers. I never met Sam, but was struck by the strong resemblence to
his 3rd cousin, John H. Hazlett (1891 - 1982), a former Campbell Reunion president.
Not eveyone looks alike, but you often will know looking at a phot that it's
one of the family. And 6 people may be similar enough that it's often hard
to tell which is which.
Moral of the story -- identify everyone you can in your family photos and label
them. The next generation doesn't have your memories as to who is who.
Pelease check against your computer files or your memories. Some of the spouse
surnames listed below may now be dads and thus the name should be moved to the
"Descendants" section. Many wives that married into the family may be missing
from "Spouses" because I don't know their maiden names. And there are sure
to be some marriages I haven't yet heard of. Even tho I may sometimes sound
like a know-it-all, every one of you know things that I don't.

By the way, we have a few cousins who still carry the Campbell surname. For
those who have Will Selph's 1923 Geneaology chart of the Ann Clinch & 1793 Joseph
Campbell branch, they are descendants of Marinette's Henry Sizer Campbell and
Elmira's Wm. S. Campbell.
In the James Campbell-Mary Blackwell line we have fortunately living women who
were born with the Campbell name, but are now married. I'm not aware of any
living males in this line that still carry the Campbell name, so it will dissapear
from this line. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Unfortunately we don't know a lot about the John Campbell-Elizabeth Bell line.
Except for the Sloans, most of our information is only about the next two generations
in that line.
Ann Lugg gently called my attention to a major oversight in the list of Spouse
Surnames - BLACKWELL.
Don't know how I overlooked Mary Blackwell (1806 -1863), she's my Half 2nd great-grandaunt
and the wife of my 2nd great-granduncle (James Campbell). And a number of the
subscribers to this mail list are descendants of hers. I even went to 3 towns
in Gloucestershire researching Mary's father, Enoch Blackwell (abt 1764 - 1816)
-- Horsley, Shortwood, and Nailsworth. And he and Ann Clinch and Sarah (Lugg)
Clinch Blackwell Campbell all have Avening in common. Such a wonderful church
there, built by Wm. the Conqueror and his Queen.
That's probably not my only omission. Many of you may know spouse names that
I don't know.
So keep those additions and corrections comming.
Thanks Ann.
Continued.
Remember, some of these surnames are represented by just one individual, some
by dozens. Also, some surnames are represented by multiple, aparently unrelated
families. E. g. Richard Ellison (1800 - 1840), the founder of one branch, does
not appear to be related to Geo. Fowler Ellison (1826 - ?), the founder of another
line. And we have at least 3 different Thompson lines. Mine, which I'll call
the Plattsburgh Thompsons married into the Hoyts; a Michigan line of Thompsons
married into the Hortons; and there's a Tioga Co. line, e.g. Emma Thompson,
who married into the Seelys.
So, a surname can represent just one person; one line with lots of individuals;
or several distinct lines. I know it would be more useful if that was indicated,
but just geting this far was a lot of work.

A lot more Campbell Cousins have turned up recently, which got me thinking about
ways to express how the "clan" has expanded.
Here's one idea a list of surnames in the family. I made up two lists. One
is a list of surnames of the so far discovered descendants of Joseph and Mary
Campbell, our oldest immigrant couple, and the common ancestors of most of us.
The 2nd list is of surnames that married into the family, but do not, as yet,
have any descendants carrying that surname. Many are missing from that second
list because I only have the first name for many of the wives and don't know
their maiden name. And some on that second list may now be dads and should
be moved to the first list.
As far as who qualifies to be a descendant, I have folowed the example of the
Campbell Reunions and counted as family adoptees and step children (and their
descendants). So the criteria may be broader than some genealogical purist
like, and may include some folks who don't consider themselves Campbells, but
I would rather err on the side of inclusivity and welcoming, that too exclusive.
So, here are the A's that I presently have. Additions and corrections are welcome.
