In order to answer Rieta's questions about Wm. S. "Sumner" Copp's letter to Oliver
"Ben" Blanchard, I think the easiest way is to intersperse the letter with annotations.
I'll so them in SOLID CAPS and inside [brackets] to make it easier to distinguish
Sumner's original words from my additions. I'll give more details about Sumner
seperately, but as a brief intro, he was an artist, a contemporary and friend
of my mother, and obvioulsy, lived in Nelson as a boy. I never met Sumner,
but remember Ben. By the way, we now have some Copps in the Campbell Clan,
descendant's of Rhoda's Sam Hazlett & Ida Freedland.
If anyone can identify some of the people I haven't, or has a different idea
who they were, please let us know. I think the list will be interested, and
I know Rieta will appreciate it. I will supply more data about Sumner later.
Dear Ben, Thank you so much for the prompt and efficient reply to my request.
I have already forwarded it to the Cival Service Commision. I am making three
copies of this letter and mailing one to Aunt Ada [???], one to Arnie [???]
and Mabel [???] and one to you. For what I will say to you would be essentially
the same if I wrote seperate letters to them. I am enclosing one dollar each
for each of you. You were too kinda to send any bill. If this is not sufficient,
please let me know the correct amount. And now, as to the future and Marriage.
I am afraid thar is largely a state of mind. It is rather a difficult matter
to get a divorce. And I have always had a horror of courts, every since I spent
a few days in the county jail at Wellsboro. Then too, I may still be young in
body, but I am rapidly growing old in mind and spirit. As a man thinketh so
he is, Christ said. And my thoughts are more often with the past. I would like
a home. I was always a home man. And there is no home where there is no kind,
good woman. I have met a number of ladies since being in (Page is worn-I think
it is )Newark the last four years, but none of them are quite like Marion [???]
was. But of course, she never c____ for me. She had no reason to. But still,
that doesn't prevent me from comparing her with others. So, although I am invited
hither and yon, and in business ways also, most often find myself sitting alone
in my own place of an evening looking back in my mind's eyeto the blue hills
of Pennsylvania. And I am not alone. I see Hen Goodrich [HENRY DAVID GOODRICH
(1844 - 1927), MINISTER OF NELSON'S METHODIST CHURCH, SEE ITS STAINED GLASS
WINDOW IN HIS MEMORY, MAILMAN, CIVIL WAR NAVYAL VETERAN, PREACHER AT THE FARMINGTON
PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, STORYTELLER, MY GGF, AND FATHER-IN-LAW OF CAMPBELL COUSIN
JOE HOYT] coming up the street as plain as I did thirty years ago. Charlie Cole
[???] is talking with Ed [???] about their pigs. Kate [???] has her old black
shawl over her head and is going over to see Sime [???] and Mrs. Aldrich [???].
Jane Kelly [???] is carrying water & John [???] smiles and walks back & forth
under the maple trees. Aldy Bates [???] whisks by with the gray team and the
new rubber tire buggy. Bertha & Frank Hoyt [BERTHA BATES WAS A FRIEND OF MY
GRANDMOTHER, FRANCES (GOODRICH) HOYT (1871 - 1958), WIDOW OF JOE HOYT] walk
by in the cool of the evening. Hank Ronalder [???] comes up to talk with my
father about work in the tobacco. Mark and Sue [CAMPBELL COUSIN MARCUS B. SEELY
(1847 - 1932) AND WIFE, SUSAN E. LOSEY (1850 - 1933)] are in the store, and
Lena [LENA EDNA (SEELY) GOODRICH (1875 - 1954), DAU. OF MARK & SUE, WIDOW OF
DAVID Z. GOODRICH, BROTHER OF FRANCES HOYT] is looking at her rose bush. Emily
[EMILY A. SEELY (1880 - 1966), SISTER OF LENA, WIFE OF CHAS. B. BLANCHARD, BROTHER
OF BEN] is practicing on the piano and George Baker [???] stands out front of
his store and tells Kenneth [???] not to throw stones at the dogs. Bert Rawley
[ALBERT B. ROWLEY, HUSBAND OF CAMPBELL COUSIN GOLDIE HAZLETT, OFTEN CUT MY
HAIR & FRANKLIN OWLETT'S], is busy shaving and unpacking men's winter work
clothes. You are in the old post office, and I can still hear the stamp, stamp,
stamp of the letters. I don't think there was ever any one as fast at it as
you. Even Hen Goodriche's funny stories didn't stop you. And was there ever
a better man and woman than Dave and Mrs. Bowers [???]? And I sort of lost something
out of my lifethat I never found again , when Fre_ and Edna died. Mrs. Wilbur
always made every one feel happier with her witty sayings and jolly disposition.
Charlie Meritt and his wife [CAMPBELL COUSIN CHARLES FOWLER MERRITT (1865 -
1916] AND ELLEN L. STODDARD (1859 - 1933)] were A number one folks. And Ed Hazlett
[CAMPBELL COUSIN J. EDWARD HAZLETT (1860 - 1928)] had rare qualities. I can
remember Dave Goodriche's [SEE LENA ABOVE] funeral in the old church and the
tears streaming down Mr. Colclough's [???] Face. He was a grand old man. As
a boy I thought Lime Hall [LYMAN HALL (1858/59 - ?), BROTHER-IN-LAW OF CHAS.
L. BEIVER, A LUGG] the perfect man physically. I just bought a gallon of sweet
cider. But it doesn't tasate like that which Clarlie Blackwell [ENOCH CHAS.
BLACKWELL (1867 - 1927), NEPHEW OF MARY (BLACKWELL) CAMPBELL, HALF NEPHEW OF
ANN (CLINCH) CAMPBELL, AND 1ST COUSIN ONCE REMOVED OF BOTH] used to make down
at the old red mill. I can see Lena and the three boys [CARLIE'S WIFE, BETSEY
PHILENA PRESTON (1877 - 1953) AND SONS: BYRON LOCKWOOD BLACKWELL (1895 - 1915);
ENOCH ARDEN BLACKWEL (1898 - 1992); AND WATROUS PRESTON "DUTCH" BLACKWELL (1900
- 1982), WHOM I MET A FEW TIMES] riding through the lane at a wild pa__ [PACE?]
followed by the tree dogs. Lockwood has been away so long, I wonder if he has
forgotten when he and I used to get up winter mornings and go and look at the
traps? I remember when Dan Van Dyke [???] built the big barn. The fire that
burned the old covered bridge and the one that took you away from the corner.
I can still see the square pillar of the old hotel. There was a time in my life
when they were bigger than the Empire State. I used to like to go into Doc Park's
[???] office to smell the drugs Do you remember what they used to call Mrs.
Doctor Stevens[???]? And do you remember the night they held up Rundall Knapp
[???] when he was on his way home from courting Doody Beech [???]? I've seen
quite a few Broadway productions here in New York. But I swear to you, there
wa never a one of them quite so magnificent as THE OLD MAID"S CONVENTION. I
remember when Denny Savey [???] died. No one could play checkers like Doctor
Baxter [CALVIN SCOTT BAXTER (1860 - 1921), BROTHER-IN-LAW OF J. EDWARD HAZLETT].
We were all young when Ben Chamberlain [???] had his barber shop. And Fred Skelton
[???] taught school. And Professor Dannsang [???] at the town gatherings. JD
Campbell [JOSEPH D. CAMPBELL (1839 - 1909)] never had but one corn cob pipe
in all his life. How Buck Mourie [IF MEMORY SERVES ME CORRECTRLY, "BUCK" WAS

COUSIN, JOSEPHINE MERRITT WM.'S SON, CHARLES W. MOURIE/MOWREY (1820 - 1903)
M. CAMPBELL COUSIN LAURA J. BOSARD] like to go down on the Tioga River fishing.
Nan Pepper [NANCY J. (HAZLETT) PEPPER (1859 - 19XX)] was a good Methodist. Charlie
Lugg [CHAS. BYRON LUGG (1864 - 1938), GRANDFATHER OF TONY AND BONNIE THAT CAME
TO OUR LAST REUNION] a good school director, Jim Losy [JAMES TAGGERT LOSEY (1843
- 1904), HUSBAND OF CAMPBELL COSIN JENNIE MERRITT (1851 - 1912), BROTHER OF
SUSAN (LOSEY) SEELY] a good mill hand. Barney Luther [???] a hard worker. Lee
Hoyt [???] was never sad. And there were so many others. So you see, I am never
alone. Well, good bye, and God Bless the people of Nelson. Always, Wm. S. Copp
Here's the remaining installment of the Desc. of Sam and Ida Freedland Hazlett.

We've gotten some great stuff from Rhonda and Rieta on Sam & Ida. And from Ann
and Rieta (appologies if I'm leaving someone out) on Betty Elliot Campbell.
But I've received some follow-up questions about both families that I thought
would be of enough interest ot answer on the list.
Campbells.
As was mentioned earlier, Betty's husband, James Campbell, was the son of Clyde
W. Campbell. Clyde lived (1888 - 1942), was the president of the Campbell Reunion
Assoc. from 1931 to his death - with a break in 1933 when he was VP. Clyde
m. Villa Ordway (1888 - 1942) and also had a son John (1919 - abt 1990). Some
of you met Bill Campbell at our last reunion. His dad, Wilfred "Bill" Campbell,
told me that as a boy, he (Wilfred) found the reunions boring. So, he and James
and John would "sneak off" and play in the fields or creek.
Clyde was the son of John C. Campbell (1850 - 1906) and Harriet E. Clark (1852
- 1924). John C. was a son of James Campbell (1798 - 1865) and Mary Blackwell
(1806 - 1863), dau. of Enoch Blackwell (abt 1764 - 1816) and Sarah Lugg (1771
- 1867). Mary and her half-sister, Ann Clinch, were both Luggs.
Hazletts.
Rieta did a great job giving us the 12 children of Sam and Ida Freedland Hazlett.
The correct order is a mystery at the moment. Like most things in genealogy,
her data inspired readers to ask for additional data, in this case, about their
desc. My data is incomplete, and others make have additions or corrections.
Nothing to add on Louella and Merle, Rieta covered it well.
Genevieve was born in Nelson Twp., and died abt 1995. She married Pearly Gee
and had at least 3 children:
1) Catherine Gee, m. Mr. Swan and had children Richard Swan and Myra (Swan)
Hendrickson;
2) Dorothy Gee, m. Mahlon Webster, who died in 2001; and
3) Eloise Gee, m. Mr. Childs and had a son and daughter.
Goldie Hazlett m. Albert B. "Bert" Rowley, son of Benson and Jane Rowley, on
Christmas Day 1908 in Helson. They had a dau., Emma, who m. Merritt Close,
son of Will and Shirley Close. Emma had 2 dau. Alice (Close) Doan, who came
to our last reunion, and MaryAnn (Close) Timm.
Lucille Hazlett m. Guywin Smith, son of Horace and Alice Dickenson Smith. Guywin
Smith's brother, Morris L. Smith m. 2nd to Betsey Philena Preston, widow of
Enoch Chas. Blackwell, and 3rd to Elizabeth Van Dusen Trexler, widow of Angelo
Rupar. Elizabeth's grandmother was Sally Owlett. Elizabeth's son, Wm. Rupar,
m. a neice of Lucille. Guywin and Lucille had 2 children:
1) Ellsworth Guywin Smith, m. Edith Cavanough and hsd sons Lyle and Stanton,
both dead; and
2) Betty Jane Smith, widow of a Mr. Siebert, m. 2nd Gordon Erway, whose dad,
Fred C. Erway was an Owlett, and mother, Laura Irma Gerow, has connections to
the Hazletts. Betty had sons Allen and Teddy Siebert.
Stella Hazlett m. Wm. Kirk.
Lettie Hazlett d. abt 1975 in the Corning Hosp., m. Max Preston, who d. 1941
in Elkland. They had 2 children:
1) Irma Goldie Preston, d. 1959, m. Weldon Reed Pease d. 1998 (2 children Carol
(Pease) Button and Weldon D. Pease); and
2) Agnes Preston, d. 1999, m. Mr. Schaffer, d. MI, and Earl Quakenbush, d.1995.
Agnes' son, Lee Schaffer is also desceased.
Eleanor Hazlett (1897 - 1988) m. Chas. Tremaine (1892 - 1979) and had two sons,
both dead:
1) Chas. Tremaine (1925 - 1990), m. Eleanor ___ (1919 - 1995); and
2) Frank Tremaine.
Margarett Hazlett, b. 1899, d. 1900.
Leon "Jake" Hazlett (1906 - 1984), m. 1) Verna Holmes, and 2)Minnie Snyder.
Ida (Hazlett) Watkins, Helen (Hazlett) Tomb, and Geo. G. Hazlett need more space
so will go in a later message. And I need to take a break from typing. But
Rhonda and the Rupars will apear in another installment, coming soon to theaters
in your area.
Thanks Ann - that was a lot of typing. So far, you're the only one to send it.
I'm forwarding it to the list because many others will appreciate the information.

Yes, Bob, now that you mention it, I do remember someone singing that song at you and Bert's wedding, but I didn't remember that it was the singing dentist and. and I didn't until now think I had ever known or heard of the singing dentist others of you were talking about. How nice to make another "connection". I have made so many this week it seems.
Thanks for reminding me,
Rieta
Hi Group,
Just a quick note to say how much I enjoy the current round of
rememberances of Nelson. I remember the singing dentist Eugene Watkins well.
He sang at my wedding on 22 June 1968. What a great voice he had. He sang
"I'll be there at apple blossom time." Remember Rieta? You were there too.
Regards,
Bob Powers

Isn't it great to have discussions going on at last? Folks like Rieta posting
messages and Rhonda and Betty and Marylyn joning in. Please join in too, with
your questions, coments, or things to share. And where are you guys? Strong
silent types?
I'm not sure how many grades there were in Nelson High School then. Last night
I was reading about Parkhurst (or was it Pattison) privately building a high
school for Elkland. They were very proud that it had 12 grades as opposed to
the 8 or 10 grades in other area school districts. And the pictures I have
seen of Nelson High School graduating classes around then did not have this
many students, so those on the program may have been from other grades, not
just the graduates.
1908 Nelson High School Commencement Participants: Please tell us about the
people not yet idetified, or mistakes I have made, or additional memories you
may have of them.
Buel Baker - son of Raymond Baker and Alice Babcock. Buel was prop. of a hardware
store in Lawrenceville, at the S.W. corner of US15 and PA49.
Dorothy Baker - Rieta already made some suggestions.
Wellington Bates - ???
Enoch Blackwell - Probably Enoch Arden Blackwell, b. Jun 13, 1898 in Nelson,
d. Mar. 1, 1992 at the Wellsboro hospital, son of Enoch Charles Blackwell and
Betsey Philena "Lena" Preston. He married Cora Margaret Rathbone (1902 - 1987).
Lockwood Blackwell - Byron Lockwood Blackwell, b. Nov. 21, 1895, d. Sep. 14,
1915, older brother of Enoch Arden B.
Messr. Blanchard - without a first name it's hard to know which Blanchard this
was.
Harold Clemons - ???
Clara Eaton - One possibility is the Clara Eaton that m. Wm. B. Merritt (a Hazlett
cousin) and was the dau. of Ida Campbell (1852/53 - 1939) and James R. Eaton
(1850/51 - 1938). I don't have dates for this Clara so am not sure.
Claude Farnham - ???
Augusta Elliot - ???
Burr Hall - Charles Burr Hall, b. 1891, d. aft. 1939, m. Vilette ___ (1897 -
1972), son of Edwin J. Hall and Hazlett cousin Mary Merritt.
Mr. H. E. Hazlett - I think this was a typo. Possibly Edgar Hopstill "Hope"
Hazlett (1843 - 1910) but more likely J. Edward "Ed" Hazlett (1860 - 1928),
a school board member. Ed m. Eva Elizabeth Baxter (1856 - 1926), was a Republican
leader, and was famous for being absent minded. He was a son of Joh Hazlett,
Jr., and Lucy Dunham.
Miss Hooker - already identified by Betty Davis Phillips, as Campbell cousin
Treva Hooker, later wife of John H. Hazlett. I knew them well. Two children;
one living
Elizabeth Hoyt and Isabelle Hoyt - already identified.
Carl Joseph - ???
Roscoe Kemp - Campbell cousin Roscoe Miller Kemp, b. Aug 5, 1894, d. Mar. 1973,
m. Crenna Chilson, son of Harry Curtis Kemp and Mattie Miller. Roscoe was Pres

(a Hazlett). Jim's sister, Susan Losey, m. Mark B. Seely (a Campbell).
George Selph - ???
Orcelia Shaw - ???
Hugh Smith - my mother's 2nd cousin. He was a son of Chas. H. Smith and Alma
E. Goodrich. Hugh later lived in Corning and Painted Post.

some papers of Arthur's father, Civil War Veteran Philo Stevens.
Walter Thompson - previously discussed.

It's an intermittant problem, since many of your messages have made it fine.
Please send me a copy of any that didn't make it.
I'm sure that others have, or soon will, encounter this problem. As part of
RootsWeb's effort to protect us from viruses, everything that it forwards to
mail list subscribbers is plain text. It does this by removing any attachments
that are not .txt; and by attempting to translate any messages it receives in
Word or Rich Text Format or HTML, into plain text. Sometimes the translator
works successfully; sometmes it gets confused and gives up.
The format in which an e-mail send out messages is usualy controlled in a "Preferences"
or "Configuration" section in your e-mail software. Perhaps some one using
the same version of AOL software that you do can tell you pricisely where to
find that option. Try using the online help feature to find it. There will
be an option that has choices like HTML, RTF. Usually the choices are presented
as "Radio Buttons". That is, each has a circle in front of it and one has a
black center. Only one can be selected. When one is turned on, the previous
choice is turned off. Pick the one that looks like it implies the least "coding".
Until then there is a temporary work-around while you fiddle with the configuration.
It may sound strange, but should work fine:
1) Windows users can compose message using WordPad;
2) Use File/SaveAs to write the message as a file, choosing Text Document as
the file type; and
3) Go into your e-mail system, hit New, type in the To Address and the subject;
4) Attach the file you just saved; and
5) Send.
That's inconvenient, but should work fine till your Preferences/Configuration
problem is fixed.
hi all--I do not send a messy email.....and the ast two have been returned to

My mother & I attended the calling hours this afternoon for Betty Campbell. We saw her daughter Elizabeth"Jane" Stewart and met Jane's two sisters. It was kinds ironic and neat to realize that Jane's son Doug Seamans & our son David had been best friends in school and were together the day our son was killed. Doug spent a lot of time at our house and aways refered to me as his second mom. With Doug's name being Seamans and his mother's being Stewart I never made the connection till today. What a reunion!!. It certainly is a small world.
Our sympathy and prayers go out to the Campbell family,
Especially for Rhonda: Sam Hazlett was b:1865-d:1947, Ida Freeland Hazlett was b:1874, d: 1958. I have 13 children list for them, but no dates for most of them. I think Ida was one of the youngest, if not the youngest. I would appreciate info on your father's family and dates as well as yours. I'm not a descendant of the Hazlett"s. My connection is with the Campbells several generations ahead of Ida & Sam.
Sincerely,
Rieta P Boyden
I have a SAMUEL WATKINS, and daughter Sarah Adaline WATkins in my (pardon the
expression---"ex's" line)........wondering...
Also have a Jane Watrous married to a Jehiel Wood---need to find her parents
and wondering if they might be the infamous E.B.Watrous family of Tioga
CO...?????
Please....
Marylyn
Thanks, Rieta, for alerting us to the loss of Cousin Betty. It was great that
Betty and Jane came to our reunion and many of us got to meet Betty for the
first time. It made for continuity because Betty was at the last of the "original"
Campbell Reunions, the 1942 one, at which her husband, James Campbell, presided
- filing in for his dad, Clyde, who died shortly before that reunion.
Elizabeth Florence Elliot was b. Nov. 2, 1917 in Osceola. On Jun 24, 1939 she
married James Campbell, b. Sep 29, 1916 in Elkland, d. May 19, 1971 in Elkland.
James and Betty owned and operated the Red and White store in Osceola - some
of you may remember them from that. (I remember the candy I bought there as
a kid, but not who sold it to me.) Betty remained active and as late as last
year was working at the Elkland school cafeteria and enjoying the kids - and
vice versa.
Our sympathy to Betty's 3 daughters and grandchildren.
