I have a Campbell family in Longford (County Longford) Ireland and have been
researching for many years now to learn more about them. My William Campbell
was married to Frances Tanner 11 Dec. 1823 in the TempleMichael Church of
Ireland Longford. Frances was born in that parish and William was born in Ardith
Parish.
They became Methodists and it is possible to trace the family history of
children born to them who died in these records. There are two children who lived
to adulthood. Mary who eventually came to Canada and married John Shaw &
lived in Elora Ontario. The other is William born 1837 who was brought as a
child to Canada by older brother Robert in 1842 as William and Frances had died.
Mary and Robert later rec'd a little money for property in Longford and Robert
was not mentioned so it is possible that Robert was a cousin although family
always considered him a brother.
The Campbell story is a tragic one I feel because six of Frances nine
children (incl. Robert) died young. And Frances died in childbirth with the ninth
child William was born 14 June 1837 . Her husband William died in 1839
There is a Letetia Campbell in this story and she may be William's sister,
sister-in-law or second wife. How the Campbell family came to Longford and why
will probably never be known. Most Scots went to Ulster, and Longford in a
farming district in the north central area. William was a publican and that
means that he owned a pub and it was on the corner of Market Street and New
Street. Longford is a town where people are friendly and eager to help with
genealogy questions.
