Based on the Campbell DNA project there are three groups of Campbells.
About two thirds of the Campbell participants have similar Scottish DNA and
probably decended from the Scottish Clan Campbell. Some of these were
relocated to Ireland during the "Plantation" so are Irish Campbells of
Scottish origin. About one sixth of the Campbells are actually descendants
of the Irish Clan Cathmhoal, which was pronounced similar to Campbell and
which change its spelling to Campbell during the plantation period for
prestige reasons since the native Irish were persecuted. These Irish
Campbells are neither related to the Scottish Campbells nor to the Irish
Campbells of Scottish descent. I descended from this Campbell line. The
last sixth of the Campbells aren't related to anyone, so evidently acquired
the name Campbell for unknown reasons.
The only way to determine which line of Campbells you descended from is by a
DNA test, unless you have documented evidence. But be careful of any
genealogical research done before the 20th century because it is often
vanity genealogy, i.e. ancestors were traced back to nobility simply to
charge more.
