Good morning Lorraine - unfortunately cant help with your search.
Thro' lack of time (money probably comes into it as well)! I've not
managed to go further back than my gt. Grandfather - John Campbell - b.
1841 (?) in Co. Kildare, Ireland. This name seems to be very much a
family one for us. I have never been able to find information about any
of my family on the internet - Roots or any similar search engine - and
have had to use the Kildare Historical Society for what little I have.
Which is where it starts to get expensive. John C. had several
brothers and sisters and what happened to them I don't know. Certainly
some of my family still live in/around Co. Kildare, but I've no contact
with them, unfortunately. I suspect that at some stage my ancestors
moved from Scotland to N. Ireland and from there to Kildare. There are
a lot of Campbells in N. Ireland, descendants of what we call
"Gallowglass" (that's the English spelling) - they were hired soldiers
or bodyguards for the Irish nobility until they were scattered in the
early/mid 1600s as a result of the Plantation of Ulster. Some could
also have come over as servants with the people who supplanted the Irish
aristocracy.
However my family arrived in Kildare our roots are certainly Scottish we
still, for instance, hear the "3 knocks" when someone in the family is
about to die. I've heard them myself and it was impossible to guage
whether the knocks were on a door or window. Eerie! Originates from
the Massacre of Glencoe (1691).
I know none of the above is really what you were/are looking for but
hope is still of interest to you.
Finally CAMPBELL = CAM BEAL = crooked or sulky mouth! CAM = crooked,
BEAL = mouth in Gaelic.
Good luck with your research. Kate (Campbell) Clipperton, Abingdon,
Oxfordshire, England.(originally, Limerick, Ireland)

Subject: [Irish Campbells] Campbell/Alexander
Hi,
This is my first posting.
My great grandfather Hugh Campbell born 1860c married Mary Jane
Alexander born 1855c in 1877 Bushvale Pres. church. Co Antrim.
Hugh's father was a Balfour Campbell, shoemaker, Culdoo/Culdoch. Mary
Jane's father John Alexander, labourer, Dumadrian?.
Hugh and Mary Jane moved with their family back and forwards to Port
Glasgow. I found them on the 1901 census for Port Glasgow. Then lost
track of them. Possibly moved back to Ireland.
Children of Hugh and Mary Jane are
Thomas born 1879 Ireland married Annie Chestnutt 1902 Port Glasgow (lots
of
info)
Martha born 1880 Kildollagh , no further info.
Elizabeth born 1885 Port Glasgow, No further info.
Agnes born 1887 Coleraine married James Hood 1910 Port Glasgow. My
grandparents.
Any help appreciated
