Maree Fitzgerald,
I am looking for Christopher and Isabela (?) Campbell in County Tyrone,
born at about the same time period as your Ellen. I have no Ellen Campbells
in my data base.
So bear with me and my conjecturing:
I do know that Christopher and Isabela named their only son Patrick.
According to the custom, Patrick would have been named after his father's
father. So, my Christopher's (and your Ellen's, if they were siblings),
father's name could have been Patrick Campbell.
Continuing with the same shaky hypotheses, and knowing that Christopher and
Isabela named their only daughter Margaret, then, supposing that the first
daughter was named after the mother's mother, and if Christopher and Ellen
were siblings, then their maternal grandmother (Isabela's mother)would have
been named Margaret (surname unknown).
In support of the naming custom (first son after the father's father, etc.):
the next generation (in Rhode Island by then) did follow it, somewhat;
Patrick and his wife Catharine Gorman named their first 5 children pretty
much according to that custom. The next five were named in a more random
fashion. Your Ellen would have been named after the mother's mother'
sister, if there is such a position in the custom.
So if you get any replies to your posting that contain a combination of the
names Christopher, Isabella, Ellen, Patrick, or Margaret Campbell, I would
appreciate hearing from you.
The births and marriages of Irish Catholic people from this time period were
not recorded until the late 1830s (according to Heritage World in
Dungannon), so the only other way to find out about them is to act
desparatly, in hopes that someone will come across a family bible or other
non public record that will shed some light for us. I assume my Campbells
of Tyrone were Catholic, because while I was there a few years ago, I
learned that 90% of the Campbells in the Ballygawley area are Catholic.
I feel that my Campbells lived in either the Errigal Keerogue or the
Clogherny parishes, west of Ballygawley and south of Beragh. A related name
might have been McCrystal.
This is all a lot of conjecture, but what else do we have?
Good Hunting.

Dear List,
I hope someone can help me, I'm trying to locate information about Ellen
Campbell. All I know is that she was born ~1810 married James Doherty and
came from County Tyrone. If anyone can see a connection please let me know.
Thankyou Maree
