My great grandfather, John J Campbell, b. 1845/9 in Darlington, SC stated on the 1900
census, that his father was from Ireland and his mother was from SC. I have not learned
either's names. Can anyone help me with a Campbell from Ireland that came to the US
and moved to SC by 1845 where he would have married and had John J Campbell by then in
SC?
You didn't mention when John J died...or if you have obtained his death
certificate or searched for an obituary. Both might give his father's
name. You can also search the US censuses. The 1850 census lists all
family members and I would start with it and work my way forward.
I did a quick look at the 1840 census for Darlington and found the
following Campbells:
A.B. Campbell, betw 30-39 yrs of age
Robert Campbell, 50-59
Duncan Campbell, 20-29
Mary Campbell, 50-60 (with sons in their 20s)
John Campbell, 20-29 (living alone)
The 1850 census does not give where they were born or names of the other
family members other than the head of household. So if I were you, I
would follow them in the 1850 census and see if one had a son John J
about your John's age.
