Hi Susan.
Thanks for your response, and the complement on my site. Regarding my web
page software, I am using a few packages. One of them is CMS Made simple,
whic provides the basic structure for most of the main pages. For the
genealogy I have been using a package called "gramps" which has the
capability to output the webpages you see on the "old family tree" pages.
Recently I've been fooling with a package called phpgedview and im in the
process of seeing how well that will work. I'm a linux geek so all my stuff
is on my personal web server in linux.
Research in Ireland is difficult because large numbers of the census
information, etc were destroyed by a great fire. However if you know the
church parish that your family worshipped in you may be able to find
information by looking up the church records in PRONI, however none of the
info is online yet so it has to be done by somebody who physically visits
there. There are services for this, but I haven't found any volunteers yet.
Shiplists for the 1830's or therabouts are very difficult to find, and
unless your family were upperclassment, or officials of some sort they were
steerage, and may not have been listed on the passenger list. I've been
trying this route too.
Research in Canada is easier, because of sites like the automated genealogy,
the LDS, etc. 1901 and 1881 census information for Quebec and Ontario is
available online. As well, there are numerous genealogical societies that
can help, but it doesn't get you much information about anything overseas.
The Campbell's in Ireland, to my knowledge, have a mixed history. A large
number of scott Campbell's emmigrated to Ireland during the 17th century at
the bequest of King George, however an irish clan in and around Tyrone
county also adopted the Campbell family name, so the history is a bit
"muddied". I am facing the same questions and challenges.
I am not sure where my family came from exactly, the only information I have
is "Tyrone county", I have the names of the first emmigrant to Quebec, Lower
Canada, his wife, and the children that were born in Ireland.and that's
about it, however I'm pretty certain that if we could trace it back far
enough, we are almost certainly related.
I can send you what links I have to Campbell family history in Ireland and
to the automated genealogy and the LDS genealogy database, that may be of
help to you though.
Thanks for your email and if I find anything I'll most certainly share it
with you. I'll get around to posting the links for the automated genealogy,
and the LDS stuff and campbell family history soon, but a google search will
turn all of those up as well.

your web page is very impressive. I need to do something like that. maybe
this summer. what software are you using? We are Campbells, too. Left
Ireland (Antrim, Ballymoney) about 1830 to Canada. Ended up in Ottawa just
north of Lake Erie. I am trying to find ship lists that might give more
information because probably they came with other Campbells. Probably
landed in Quebec. Charles Campbell family. I am looking for more info on
them in ireland. Charles married Margaret Lamont. they had some children
in Ireland and then left. I know there must be more records of them in
Ireland but haven't been able to find them. Also don't understand much
about Canada research either. We do know where Charles and Margaret are
buried. Our line immigrated to Iowa, US, but other siblings stayed in
Canada. Any help or direction appreciated. Also trying to find a way to
trace the Campbells back to Scotland, but this seems very difficult as
there were so many Campbells. Sure we are related someway.
