Hello: I am descended from a son of Lt. Col. William Campbell, born 1663,
fought at the Siege of Kerry on the Protestant side in 1689. His sons
Samuel and James came to America in the early 18th century. For 200 years or
so, we have believed that William was a member of the Auchinbreck Campbells of
Argyll, Scotland. There is a lot of circumstantial evidence pointing in
this direction. However, recently I have been told that DNA work has
disproved this and that William was descended from an Old Irish family, probably the
O'Neills. Does anyone have any information about this? William was
clearly a prominent man and almost certainly from a "gentry" family, so there
must
have been some work done on his ancestry. He was also said to have been
involved in the Monmouth Rebellion against James II. Thank you, Michael
