Hi, Jeanette. I enjoyed your post regarding descendants of John Camp.
I am particularly interested in him at this point. John and Mary supposedly
helped found the little United Methodist Church near Princeton, South
Carolina where at least Mary is buried in the old churchyard. I am a
life long member of the United Methodist Church and have recently become
interested in its history as well as that of our family. The story is
that Bishop Asbury preached at the Lebanon UMC. Bishop Asbury was appointed
by the Wesleys (the founders of the Methodist Church) as the Bishop of
the entire new United States. I learned over the weekend that the
Candler Divinity School here at Emory has some early history of the
church and it is possible there is more information regarding the
Lebanon UMC and therefore as a long shot - our John Camp. I will try
to look into it as soon as this wretched flu that has my family down
subsides.
In the meantime, I have supplements to Jeanette's information. I am
descended through Seaborn Camp and his second wife, Elizabeth Parish.
She shares ancestry with Margaret Mitchell. My line is through John
Thomas Camp, the eldest son of Seaborn and Elizabeth, through the
eldest son of John Thomas and his wife Martha Jane Duke, William
Robert; through the middle child of William Robert and his wife,
Mary Savannah Garner, my dad, James Irvan Camp. If anyone wishes
any information regarding these lines, please send a request.
My great-aunt Omi, the youngest child of John Thomas and Martha Camp,
is still living at age 96. She is in poor health in a nursing home
in Douglasville. She remembers visiting Elizabeth Parish Camp by
train. She described "Aunt Sissy" as being short, stout and jolly.
She does not remember the reason Elizabeth was not buried with Seaborn
in the Camp cemetary, but was instead buried in the Riverdale Baptist
Church cemetary. She did relate some wonderful stories. If you
are interested, please drop me a line.
Regards,
Carole Camp Johnson
