Dear EAnthony,
I'm so glad to be of some help for someone. Are you a descendant of this
Paul W. Camp, Sr.? I am not having much luck myself with finding my Camp
line. I'm sorry, but it's too late tonight for me to try to scan the picture
for you, and now another week is starting, but I will try to get it scanned
one evening this week, but I don't get home till 6:00 and have bunches of
other stuff to do. You did see that this picture was of Paul W. Camp, Sr.,
about 1931. It is from his son, Paul W. Camp, Jr.
My great great grandmother was named Mary George Camp (I believe ). Family
history calls her Mary Camp or Mary Kemp, but I have found a marriage
certificate from Ashville, St. Clair County, Alabama, where Rufus Campbell
married Mary George Camp on September 5, 1877. The bondsman was J.A. Turley
and the marriage was at John Turley's. This makes me believe that this is my
great great grandparents because one of their daughters, Hattie, married an R.
Turley.
Their daughter Mollie Modenie (Denie) Campbell was my great grandmother and
was at least 1/2 Cherokee. I don't know if Rufus or Mary or both were
Cherokee, but at least one was because Denie was well trained in Native
American herbal medicines. My Dad had a favorite dog that was bitten by a
poisonous snake. Denie told him what herbs to go gather and she gave the dog
some of it and it got well. I have also found a cousin, Alice, whose great
grandfather was Mary Camp and Rufus Campbell's son, Jack Campbell. She has
heard the same stories that I have about how they were Cherokee, but very
ashamed of it. Mary and Rufus had one other daughter that I know of, Lee O.
In the 1910 census, she was 15, I believe, but its late and I can't look it up
right now, so Mary and Rufus were still around in 1895 to conceive Lee.
I will get the picture to you as soon as possible. Hope you have happy
hunting.
Best regards,
Karen Walker
