To: JONAS CAMP'S DESCENDANTS & OTHERS
Jonas CAMP born 1773 of Whitingham & Stamford VT is NOT the Jonas CAMP, son of Phineas
CAMP & Martha HALL b. 13 Jul 1782 in Durham, Middlesex Co. CT listed in the Barbour
records because:
1. Jonas CAMP of Whitingham & later Stamford VT on Sept. 19, 1799
purchased land from Joseph Moseley of Whitingham (Ref: Whitingham VT
Deed Book Vol. 3, Page 562).
2. Jonas CAMP of Clarksburg, MA on Feb. 15, 1800 sold land to Joseph
Moseley of Whitingham VT (Ref: Whitingham VT Deed Book Vol. 3,
Page 596).
A person would have had to be of legal age (21 years old) before he could own land. In
1799 the Jonas CAMP b. 1782 in Durham would NOT have been old enough to purchase land in
Whitingham, being only 17 years old. THESE WERE TWO DIFFERENT MEN.
I have worked closely for many years with the CAMP descendants in Vermont to discover
the ancestry of our Jonas CAMP of Whitingham & Stamford VT. Also I have copies of
research done by other descendants, now deceased, and Vermont town clerks who have also
tried to determine our Jonas' ancestry. We have scoured the Vermont area as well as
Conn. records for clues without success.
The best information we have come up with is from a story within the Vermont descendants
that the parents of our Jonas CAMP (names unknown) probably lived and died at Camp
Meadow in the southeast part of the Town of Woodford, VT. This is unverified.
We would welcome any other data or stories on our Jonas CAMP and his descendants.
