Greetings! - This message is a little long, but it involves two mysterious
Camp families from Alabama
First - Thanks to everyone who wrote me back concerning my hunt for Camp
relatives from Clopton, Alabama. As Jesse Barnett was so kind to point out,
Clopton is in the north east corner of Dale Co. AL. on state road 105 and
near the intersection with state road 10. It is (and always has been) a
little two horse town. In the 1870's I believe it was a part of Henry
County.
My great great grandfather, Wiley Camp died in Clopton in 1878. He pretty
young at the time (about 40) and was married to Martha Ann Robinson.
Martha Robinson Camp appears in the 1880 Alabama census, Clintonville,
Coffee
County and they were the only Camp family there at that time. Wiley had
died
and left her with her 5 children and her brother Franklin M. Robinson was
enumerated
with her. Martha was born ca 1850 in Alabama and all her children were born
in Alabama: John born 1870, Henry born 1872, Helena born 1874, Jennie born
1876 and Mattie born 1877.
My great grandfather was Henry Stanton Camp who married Annie Jane Boyett
and lived in Dothan.
Wiley's father is a mystery to me...but there is one other odd part to this
story.....a second Camp family that seems to be connected.
Thomas B. Camp and his wife Savanah (Parham) appear in the 1880 Alabama
census, Atkinson, Barbour
County and they were the only Camp family there at that time. Thomas was
born in Mississippi and Savanah was born in Georgia. All their children were
born in Alabama: Augusta A. born 1870, William Wiley. born 1872, John
Stanton born
1843, Jinny M. born 1875, Evline born 1877 and Gertrude born 1879
John Stanton Camp b. Mar. 30, 1873 d. 1943 Clopton, AL
m. Mar. 1900 to Mattie Levenia "Lee" Clarke b. 1877 d. 1940
Both are buried in the Methodist Cemetery in Headland, AL.
A book on Henry County had all of these children listed as being born in
Clopton.......just like Wiley's children.....both families have a child with
the middle name "Stanton".....and Thomas' first born son has the middle
name
"Wiley". There must be a connection between these Camp families, but I
can't prove it. Thomas is too young to be Wiley's father, but may be a
brother or cousin. If anyone has connections to either of these two
families, I would love to make contact!
Thanks for following this confusing tale,
Steve Groh
