Ancestry.com bought out rootsweb a couple of years ago. I am now finding old
rootsweb lists with the URL changed to
ancestry.com. Rootsweb used to be an
organization that was run by our donations. I donated every year to them. I
also donated some information that had been copyrighted by me and my husband.
It is one thing to copyright and another thing to try to sue without using a
lot of your own money in the process. I have let it go, but donate no more
of my own research on those lists. I also have stopped using
ancestry.com as
they are charging more and more for different things.
I agree with the person who said that, at least, FTM let people know that if
they donated their family trees, they would be sold on CDs. Those have
helped some people and have not helped others, as some people donated family
trees that were not proven and were in error.
Research is up to us, and now that we have computers it is easier to find
some sources, but our genealogical libraries are good places to go. I must
also say that there are many, many FTM CDs that are filled with researched
family histories of VA, NC, etc, including abstracts of wills, deeds,
military history, etc.
Let's keep our heads up and keep our brains working. Best wishes for all.
