Thank you, that does make sense...there has to be a reason for the spelling
differences....So does anyone have any idea when the spelling of the name
started changing?
I am almost sure that my Robert T Camp in Jefferson Co. IL was Robert Kemp
in Sumner Co, TN

My Camps date back to 1530 or so in Naezing, Essex, England. The info I have
found indicates that the original spelling Kampe was the Old English word
for
literally what we now call a "camp". And that the family lived on/near a
camp.
Remember, surnames didn't exist much before the 1500s so many of them
reflect
the trade of the bearer. Given names came later.
