Harold, I think you are right. My some of my family names were like
that....Unfortunately, I don't know any of my male Camp families that are left for
DNA..

My wife's family is basically Camp and Pettit from South Carolina. The
Camp
family came from
England, and the Pettit were from France by way of England. It has been my
experience that the name changes primarily came about by people writing
what
they thought they heard. Years ago, most people did not know how to read
or
write, so the spelling of the names were not that important. Years later
when the name spelling became important, people realized that the same name
had
been spelled several different ways. The McDonald name is a very good
example. The name goes from MacDonnell to McDaniel or McDonald, yet it is
all of
the same family.
