That is some wonderful links, thank you for sharing.

Theories abound, and all probably have merit, but....
I'd suggest you look at John Scott Kemp's website,
http://nathankempnetwork.happywebsite.biz/index.html, or contact him
directly at collectorjims(a)yahoo.com. Is direct CAMP ancestor was Nathan
Camp/Kemp, 6th child of Thomas Camp III (1717-1791) by Winifred Starling.
Scott's lineage is:
John Scott Kemp, son of (etc).
John Wilbur Kemp
William Culous Kemp
Thomas Edward Kemp
Joseph Alton Kemp
Capt. Nathan MacDonald Kemp
Joseph Warren Kemp
Nathaniel Camp/Kemp
Edward(Edmund) Camp/Kemp
Thomas Camp, III
Margo Kimp sent me an e-mail concerning her last name, and it reads (in
part):
"Here is what they have listed:
Thomas Camp 1661 England
Thomas Camp 1691 Virginia
Thomas Camp 1716 Virginia
John Camp 1743 Virginia
Daniel Camp 1793 NC
Oscar Fritz Camp 1843 MS
Oscar Fritz Camp/Kemp/Kimp 1866 MS
Furman Allen Kimp 1908 AR
Billy W. Kimp 1949 AR
My husband's grandfather would get into trouble and move. He would change
his last name and sometimes his first name, too. He never changed the first
and middle names of his wife and children, so I could still find him
different places, even though he would change his last name."
So I guess the message is mixed. Any number of things could result in the
different spellings: phonetic mis-translations, family "misdeeds," etc.
Based on what I've leaned, there may be many "variations" of the name
floating around for different reasons. Each interested individual will just
have to ferret out their own answers....
Relative to DNA, I'm a direct descendant of Thomas Camp III (1717-1791) and
I've had both my paternal and maternal DNA run several times. Be glad to
share the results. However, there is a CAMP DNA Project going on now at
World Family Tree (
http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/c/camp/). Terry
Barton in Marietta, Georgia (terry(a)bartonsite.org or terry(a)bartons.org)
seems to be heading it up temporarily.
One other thing. I've never seen a "verifiable" link back to Thomas
Camp's
(abt. 1661-1711) ancestors in England, supposedly Nazeing in Essex. The LDA
website (
http://www.familysearch.org/) lists a passel of Thomas Camps, that
COULD be the same (0r different) that fit the range of dates..
Would appreciate getting data from anyone having good/reasonable/verifiable
data on that Thomas who supposedly was the one who came to America......

Subject: [CAMP] etc, the Camp name
The All Saints Church in Naezing where many of our ancestors were members
still has the original baptismal font. I was told that the base dates to
the 1100s, if my memory serves correctly, during the time of the Norman
invasion. The font itself is from the early 1500s. It has a drain in the
base so the water can be directly released under the floor. I could just
imagine the little heads of our ancestors being held over it.
The transcription of the baptimal, marriage and death records from the 1500s
at All Saints have the named spelled with a "C".
I have not seen the originals or do not know if they still exist.
There was also a record of a Camp poaching stag in Epping Forest (near
Naezing) during the reign of Henry VIII.
Again, I've only seen transcriptions, not originals.
I've also heard that there was a french version: deCamp.
For what its worth,
Carole Camp Johnson
