I wrote, some years ago, that CAMP is coming from KEMPF in AUSTRIA
KEMPF-KAMPF-KEMP-CAMP-
Some Dutch people were named CAMP because during the spanish
occupation (400 years!!) some spanish people had the name CAMPS (from
latin word CAMPUS) but the most part of CAMP is coming from KEMPF.

It could have just been the way the name was pronounced. I have some
in my
Camp family that pronounce the name as "Kemp", and some even pronounce it as
though the name had an "f'" on the end. Yet all of these folks spell the
name Camp.
