To: CAMP MAILING LIST
After three (3) generations of our family trying to trace without success the family tree
of our ancestor JONAS CAMP born 1773 at ?Vermont, died Jan. 21, 1842 in Stamford, Vermont,
my cousin submitted his DNA test to FamilyTreeDNA. Male descendants only on the Y-DNA.
Recently my cousin learned of a 67-64 match with a man named Briggs. We don't know if
the match was the result of adoption, foster child, etc. on either the Camp or Briggs line
but we do know that it was as recent as the 1600's in the New England states. Science
does not lie.
The first record of Jonas Camp we have found was when Jonas Camp purchased land in
Whitingham VT in 1799 (Whitingham VT DEED Records). He had been of legal age (21 years or
older) to purchase land. (Obituary published in the Bennington VT STATE BANNER Jan.26,
1842 "Mr. Jonas Camp, aged 69 years", making his birth 1773.)
More research is necessary to discover where and when the Camp and Briggs lines meet.
Notice of our findings will be posted in this mailing list, but judging the research
needed, it will take time.
In the meantime, if anyone has a Camp-Briggs connection before 1850 in the New England
States, please let us know.
