I have the same information on Joseph and Elizabeth from research done by
my great
aunts, Hazel Tarkington and Beulah Tarkington Crutchfield. I have
some where documentation on their vist and findings. Their findings
included sons William and Joseph also buried at Holly Springs.

I haven't joined in this discussion because I've been tied up with some
other projects and have not had time to study the correspondence, but
I've copied below some of my notes that I entered into Family Tree Maker
under Joseph Camp. Perhaps these will be of interest. I give the
location of the cemetery where Joseph and Elizabeth are buried, and
someplace in my files I have photos. I have not studied your
correspondence to see if this is the same cemetery that is to be
relocated but, if so, I think many of us would like to know for sure.
Re Annie Sara Camp Johnston, her daughter still lives in that area and
could likely find answers if you still have questions. Per Annie Sara
(our visit of March 1999), Benjamin Camp is buried at the cemetery behind
the Campbellton United Methodist Church. Many in the family were active
Masons, and the lodge was still there when we visited.
I'm descended from Delilah P. Camp, a daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth
Camp and sister to Benjamin. She (my great grandmother) and my great
grandfather, James Franklin Nelson, and a number of their Camp relatives,
moved from Campbell County, GA, to Claiborne Parish, LA, in the 1850s.

We have very little information about James Franklin Nelson, but there
seems to be a wealth of information about his wife's (Delilah P. Camp)
family, so I started contacting various members of the Camp family, and
have since joined the Camp Family Association, to see if any of the Camps
have additional information on James Franklin. One of these contacts was
by accident. Clint, Jr., had suggested that we needed to spend more time
in Georgia where James Franklin and Delilah Nelson lived before moving to
the Homer area. So, on August 23, 1997, I wrote to editors of two
newspapers in Douglasville, Georgia.
I received a reply dated August 28, 1997, from Joe Baggett, who was
listed on the internet as editor of the weekly "Douglas Neighbor
Newspaper." Joe's letter read,
"I'm sorry that I have no more information than you have on the Nelson
family, and I know of no one researching the line.
"Joseph and Elizabeth Camp, buried here at Holly Springs Cemetery, are
our common ancestors. Their son Thomas is my line. The cemetery has
recently been cleaned. Several years ago I purchased a VA marker for
Joseph's grave for his service in the War of 1812, and the graves have
been fenced.
"My brother (who has no knowledge of genealogy), Dr. James Camp Baggett,
lives near you at Magnolia Springs."
"Douglasville was founded in 1875, Douglas County in 1870. There are
only a few Campbell County newspapers on microfilm at the Ga. Archives in
Atlanta from the 1850s. You might contact another Camp descendant, Annie
Sara Johnston, a descendant of Benjamin, brother of Joseph and a member
of the Old Campbell County Historical Society in Fairburn. The society
address is 45 E. Broad St., Fairburn; phone 770-969-5618."
I wrote Annie Sara Johnston, per Joe Baggett's recommendation, and
received a phone call from her recommending that I contact a descendent
of one of the Camps who moved to Louisiana -- Norma Stewart Winegeart,
254 Forest Avenue, Shreveport, Louisiana 71104-4507 (e-mail
nsw(a)prysm.net). A few days after mailing my letter to her, she called
Sydney Nelson in Shreveport to tell him she was sending me some
information. Norma attends First United Methodist Church with Syd and
Gail, and knows both of them! Like us, Norma is a descendent of Joseph
and Elizabeth Camp -- from their son, Benjamin Camp (brother of Delilah
Camp) and Winifred Arnold.

An earlier reference showed Joseph was born in 1778. "Wayfarers in
Walton" gave the 1777 date now on the family page. He died in Campbell
County, Georgia, which is now part of Douglas County. He and his first
wife are buried at Holly Springs Cemetery in Douglas County. He served
as a private in Captain David Gillespy's Company of Infantry, 4th
Regiment, Booth's Georgia Militia from November 21, 1814 to May 6, 1814,
and was a justice of the Inferior Court of Campbell County from June 17,
1835 to February 1838.

Dona and I visited Campbell County, Georgia, in March 1999 (see James
Franklin Nelson notes, 1998 - 1999). After leaving Campbellton we drove
across the Chattahoochee River toward Douglasville, taking the Chapel
Hill road north from the river. We turned back to the southwest on West
Chapel Hill (at the construction site for the new Chapel Hill high school
and elementary school) and, after about a half mile, reached the Holly
springs cemetery where Joseph and Elizabeth Camp are buried. The
cemetery was cleaned this fall, per Camp cousin and Douglasvile resident,
Joe Baggett, and there is a marker for Joseph Camp's grave but none for
Elizabeth. We assume her grave is the almost identical raised burial
site (stone) adjacent to Joseph's.
