Hello Everyone,
With all of the activity I thought I'd post what I found on
Footnote.com
regarding Elias Camp of Polk County, Georgia. Just goes to show
you never know where information will turn up.
My mother's line of Brewer's begin in Polk County, Georgia. My
ancestor, Joel Brewer, was the Ordinary of the County from around
1870 until his death in 1898. He help found Bethlehem Baptist
Church in Fish, a community in Polk where his friend, Elias Brewer
was the pastor. If memory serves correctly, Elias is descended from
Hosea Camp. Joel Brewer even named one of his children Elias
Camp Brewer who eventually became a judge in Hall County,
Georgia. Interesting that my mother, Virginia Brewer eventually
married a Camp,
my dad, James Irvan Camp.
To get back to the documents found on Footnote, in the Southern
Claims Commission Elias made a claim against the U.S. Government
that he had some horses and their equipment taken by Union
Officers during the Civil War and he filed a claim to have compensation.
There are over 28 pages of documents including affidavits signed
by Columbus Camp and a lengthy affidavit from Elias himself. In
Elias' claim he stated that he always was a "Union man".
If anyone is in this line, I'd be happy to send you the papers.
