I received the book _ Five Miles from Everywhere The Story of Nazeing
Part One_ in yesterday's mail. It is a well written little book. The
authors have included every fact known about Nazeing from prehistoric
times to 1914. There are ten references to CAMP family members with
six to the CURTIS family.
My college daughter, a history buff, was extremely impressed that there
is mention of Queen Boudicca (from whom the word boudacious was coined)
even though it is unlikely she really fought in Nazeing.
There is discussion of the Domesday Survey, the effects of the Black
Death and famine from the early 1200 to 1300s. There are records of
a Walter CAMPE from 1277 and Osebert le Curteys (1270 Curtis Farm).
Apparently the Curtis and Camp families were prone to poach deer in
Nazeing Wood, held by Edward Greville Esq. in 1586.
There is also information regarding the effect the Puritans had on
the area and how in 1630 over 150 men, women and children of Nazeing
left for America. This is presumedly when the Curtis family immigrated
to Massachusetts.
A photograph of Ninnings, the home of William Campe, a Puritan elder in the
1640s, is included in the book. The photograph was made around 1900.
I don't know if this is one of the CAMP homes still standing.
I am a bit sketchy as to how those CAMPs directly tie to our Thomas Camp.
Does anyone have any factual sources as to how our line left Nazeing
and wound up in Virginia? I have heard rumors that our immigrant did not
go directly to Virginia, but arrived in what is now the port of Charleston,
South Carolina. It makes a great deal of sense that with the overwhelming
majority of the population of Nazeing to be Puritan that our line, along
with the Curtis' family "got out of Dodge" . Did our line leave with
the great immigration of the 150+ or leave later?
As for purchasing the book, I highly recommend it. After quickly skimming
I am now beginning to really read it. The authors did a thourough job
of listing resources. A pleasant surprise was to see the warden of
All Saints Church, the wonderful Mrs. Valerie Day, as one of the authors.
The source of the book is:
The Book Centre

I understand that they accept major US credit cards. I sent British
Sterling to Mrs. Day to purchase the book with any extra cash to be
donated to the church. The Book Centre mailed the book to me.
If you can't make a trip to Nazeing, this book is the next best thing.
If you have any questions regarding it, I'd be happy to do look ups.
