Hello fellow subscribers,
I hope you are all doing well ... haven't heard much from any of you
lately! Diane, are you still out there? Did you ever get the Viking info
you were going to share with the list? I don't mean to rush you ... just
wanted to check in with you since I hadn't talked with you or Melissa lately.
Also, following are some e-mail responses (re: George Camidge) that I have
received from some very kind people who are subscribers to the YORKSGEN-L
mailing list at Rootsweb.com
I am posting this info to our mailing list in case anyone else on the list
has an interest -or- in case at some future date, a CAMIDGE is searching our
mailing list archives ... he or she will have this info!
I apologize for the length but here goes....

Hi.
Welcome to the wacky world of genealogy. To find a birthdate in England from
July, 1837 to the present, you need to look on the Index to Births (or
Marriages, or Deaths) in England and Wales. It doesn't matter if you don't
know
the exact place as it's a national index. To get further information, other
than
the year and quarter and registration district number, you have to send for
the
certificate. The indexes are available at the larger LDS Family History
Centers.
Let me know if you don't have access to one.
Unfortunately, records were not kept of people leaving England. There are
records of passengers arriving in the United States at various ports but the
years you are interested in are not indexed by name, only by exact date of
arrival, and there are many films for each year. For this task, you need a
trip
to Salt Lake City and plenty of time. Or a lot of money to order all the
films.
If George became a US citizen, send for his Declaration of Intent to the
county
in which he was naturalized. This may tell you his exact date of arrival, but
don't count on it for that time period.
Let me know if I can help at all. Good hunting, June in San Diego

Hi, Carolyn.
In case he didn't leave until after the 1881 Census, you could probably find
his
birthplace there. June

Found 2 entries of George Camidge who were born in the approx. time you
mention on the 1881 census. None in Yorkshire. Checked all of the UK and
these two came up in Lancashire.

Hi,
I'm a Yank to, but let me make some suggestions.
1st. Try the Internet some of the ships passenger records are on line. Next
if Yorkshire is right he probable left for Liverpool and you can find a
website that has passenger lists from there.
2nd if you know the city where the census was taken try a near local port.
For ship records for who departed and use ships that came from or through Eng.
My great great was a 49'er and I had know idea until I just started through
the lists of ships from Germany. The only info I had was family stories that
he came form California. So I started THERE. I found him and also when he
came to this country. Also I found his naturalization papers. I know his
father's name but not his mothers. You might find someone in this country
that is looking for the same name or is a distant relative and they have
already done the work. Keep searching and good luck.

Hi Carolyn,
This birth will be recorded on the civil registration which is indexed for
all of England. You can rent the index films from LDS or maybe they have
them in a library near you. We have them in LA. The British Isles Family
History Society - USA (BIFHS - USA) will do a search for you for a price as
the index to civil registration is in LA. See their web page at
www.rootsweb.com/bifhsusa. Folks in England will search for you for a price
then get you the certificate. Salt Lake also has the entire index and I
imagine Sutro in San Francisco does too.
As far as passenger lists, you are in a bad time. NY is not indexed for
those years. Philly may be, I don't remember. I have not had much luck with
these lists. Only found one ancestor immigrating even when I knew the year.
Lots of mine came through Canada (found out from family correspondence) and
those entries were not recorded. Personally, I would not spend a lot of time
on this. The seminar I discuss below will cover passenger lists and how to
search them. The English did not keep track of most departures except for
prisoners, indentures, and the like. Your time period is after that. You
will need a good American book to study passenger lists since they were
largely recorded in America and by port of entry. Christina Schaffer's book
is good for this.
I suggest reading some books on how to do English research. There is an
excellent new book called " Tracing Your English Ancestors" by Paul Milner
and Linda Jonas, published by Betterway Books. For more detail, try Mark
Herber's "Ancestral Trails". Milner's book is written from a North American
viewpoint, assuming that you cannot just pop into the CRO for a look. It
gives LDS film numbers, etc. and it is for beginners to intermediate.
Herber's covers more records for an intermediate to advanced look. BIFHS
sells both of these books; I know since I order the books for the Society.
If you can at all manage it, the annual BIFHS seminar on the Queen Mary in
Long Beach, CA on Aug 24-27 will be excellent. It gave me a huge jump on my
research a couple of years ago when I was ready to start my English and
Irish research. The speakers are world class and the setting is wonderful.
After the seminar, there will probably be an opportunity for attendees to
research at the LA Family History Center which has the largest British
collection in America outside Salt Lake.
By the way, after 2 years of research, I have some of my Yorkshire families
back 15 generations. Once you get into it, English research can be very easy
since the records are so good.
Good luck
Janet Thomas

I don't suppose you know if he had other younger siblings? Since his father
isn't there he might have gone ahead of his wife and children who could have
stayed behind until Mary had had the new baby.
Anyway - given that there are so few George Camidges it should be quite easy
to find his birth. (By the way - his death certificate might give you his
exact date of birth)

Hi
I am a new subscriber to this list, after a plea on one of the Yorkshire lists
for more members, so here goes.
My interest in CAMMIDGE is fairly recent, as follows :
One of my maternal great grandmothers, Mabel Annie FLINTOFT, (b1884) married
Harry CAMMIDGE (born c1881). Prior to the marriage, she had two illegitimate
children, Frank FLINTOFT born 1909 and my grandmother, Annie FLINTOFT, born

Harry CAMMIDGE b1920
Arthur CAMMIDGE b1924
Ron CAMMIDGE b1923
Ted CAMMIDGE b1927
I am pretty sure that Harry CAMMIDGE was not the father of Frank and Annie. The
physical differences between Frank and Annie, and the subsequent children of
Mabel Annie and Harry are great. Annie and Frank were (Annie died 1992 and
Frank 1994) tall and thin, whereas the brothers Harry to Ted (all 4 alive) are
peas in the pod to each other, short and fairly well rounded.
Anyway, there you go. If anybody links into Harry, I would be interested to
hear from them.

Super Grannie: Defender of Justice (True Story)
An elderly lady did her shopping and, upon returning to her car, found four
males in the act of leaving with her car. She dropped her shopping bags and
drew her handgun, proceeding to scream at them at the top of her voice, "I
have a gun and I know how to use it! Get out of the car you scumbags!"
The four men didn't wait for a second invitation but got out and ran like
mad, whereupon the lady, somewhat shaken, proceeded to load her shopping
bags into the back of the car and get into the driver's seat. She was so
shaken that she could not get her key into the ignition. She tried and
tried and then it dawned on her why.
A few minutes later she found her own carparked four or five spaces farther
down. She loaded her bags into her car and drove to the police station.
The sergeant to whom she told the story nearly tore himself in two with
laughter and pointed to the other end of the counter, where four pale white
males were reporting a car jacking by a mad elderly woman described as
white, less than 5' tall, glasses, and curly white hair carrying a large
handgun.
No charges were filed.

To ALL CAMIDGES,
My major research interest at this time is Richard Camidge, b:1864 in the Town
of Wilna, Jefferson County, NY. (see obit below) The ONLY information I have
on Richard or his parents is Richard's obit. No other records seem to exist.
His father, Thomas, is probably the brother of William and John who came over
from York, via Liverpool, arriving in NY City in Oct 1850. I have the
naturalization papers and other records for William and John; but absolutely
nothing on Thomas.
If anyone comes across anything remotely related to this mystery; please let
me know.

REPLY: Thanks, Marcia!! I really and truly do appreciate that, especially
since I am at a loss as to how to get everyone started exchanging
information. Between you and Daniel and Mike and me and Melissa and Diane,
we should keep this list rolling! <G> ...Warmest regards... your cuz-ins

<< ...snip.... I am also interested in when George died and where. He is
not on the SS death index and may have gone back to England and died. I
don't know. Maybe he never collected SS. Katherine is however on the index
and I am going to
send for her SS application.
Is this enough info???
