I have the marriage announcement for John "Camron" and
Flory McDonell. It
states "after three publications in this church without any opposition being
found to their marriage......"
Why would they have to issue three publications? Maybe he was much older or
something? Or is this a common practice?
It was a common requirement in UK Christian churches that a Marriage should be
preceded by advance Proclamations before the congregation, on three Sabbaths.
Sometimes referred to as Calling the Banns.
The Proclamation/s are sometimes, the only record of marriage, the Wedding
ceremony data being unrecorded.
A Proclamation being made before a congregation, gave opportunity for any
abandoned spouse or deceived fiancee to shriek and wail and announce that she or
he, was the legitimate partner and the proposed marriage should not take place.
The Proclamations process could be circumvented by marrying in a distant town,
or by paying generously to be married by License.
I have many records for whom I believe to be John J's father. He is listed
as John "Camron" in all of them. The Priest also spells Kenyon Twp.
"Keynion". Is the Camron spelling correct or just misspelled?
The correct spelling of any surname is that used by the individual who owns the
name. IF I had spelled my own surname as CAMRON in spite of my father's and
grandfather's etc own spellings, then my choice would be legally correct. I am
not familiar with the laws in other non- British countries.
Thanks Dean, for asking.
Cheers.........
